Couples Tower Isle
The Couples flagship east of Ocho Rios: a beach, a private island offshore, seven places to eat, and golf and scuba in the price.
Ocho Rios, on the north coast, is Jamaica’s base for waterfalls, rivers and day trips, with resorts in town and west through Runaway Bay. It is about 90 minutes from both Montego Bay and Kingston. For our shortlist, see the best all-inclusive resorts in Ocho Rios.

Ocho Rios suits people who want to do things. It’s the north coast’s base for waterfalls, rivers, gardens and adventure parks, and families and couples who like a busy day and a quiet evening back at the resort do well here. Skip it if a long, empty beach is the whole point of your trip: the resort beaches are shorter than Negril’s, and the town fills up on cruise-ship days.
The town itself is a working port with a busy main street, a craft market and the cruise pier, and locals plan their days around the ships. Dunn’s River Falls is the first stop for many shore excursions, so go early or on a day with no ship in. At the western end, several Runaway Bay resorts haven’t reopened since Hurricane Melissa, so for now most of the open choice is in and around town.
My take: for a first trip where you want more than a beach, Ocho Rios is the best all-round base on the island. Climb Dunn’s River once, swim at the Blue Hole in the hills, ride the chairlift up Mystic Mountain, and make the drive to Nine Mile, where Bob Marley was born and is buried.

The modern Ocho Rios Sandals: smaller and more stylish than Ochi, with 12 restaurants of its own and Ochi's on top when you want more.
The big, polished family all-inclusive right in Ocho Rios: a FlowRider, kids' and teen clubs, room service around the clock and suites that sleep a whole family.

Old-school, romantic and all-suite: a couples-only resort on the cliffs with a mineral spring pool and more included than most, from excursions to scuba.

A big, busy family all-inclusive on Mammee Bay: a water park, kids' and teen clubs and six places to eat, all inside the gate.

The small family resort with the nannies: 56 suites, your own vacation nanny every day and a relaxed, Jamaican-owned feel rather than a big-brand resort.

The calm, dress-for-dinner classic of Ocho Rios: suites and cottages on a private beach, no TVs, no young children, and a meal plan you choose yourself.
The modern Ocho Rios Sandals: smaller and more stylish than Ochi, with 12 restaurants of its own and Ochi's on top when you want more.
Jamaica's most storied small hotel: 47 villas, cottages and huts around a lagoon on Ian Fleming's old estate, with meals paid as you go rather than all-inclusive.
Stay in or near town for the shortest drives to Dunn’s River, the rivers and the restaurants, and for the widest choice of open resorts: Moon Palace and the two Sandals on Main Street, and Hotel Riu and Sandals Dunn’s River on Mammee Bay just west of town. The Couples resorts and Jamaica Inn sit east of town and feel quieter. The trade-off is traffic through town and the cruise-day crowds.
Further west toward Discovery Bay, Runaway Bay is quieter, with resorts spread along the coast and not much of a town. It’s a little closer to Montego Bay airport, about an hour according to FDR, which suits families who plan to stay on the resort. FDR and Bahia Principe Escape are open; several neighbors are still closed. Every Ocho Rios excursion means a drive back east.

Partly openFrom Montego Bay airport. Most visitors fly into Sangster International (MBJ) and drive east along the north coast highway. The resorts put the transfer at about an hour to Runaway Bay, about 90 minutes to Mammee Bay and Ocho Rios town, and about 1 hour 45 minutes to Couples Tower Isle, east of town.
From Kingston. Norman Manley International (KIN) is also about 90 minutes from Ocho Rios, according to Jamaica Inn and Sandals. The route is the North-South leg of Highway 2000, a toll road that runs about 66 km from Caymanas, outside Kingston, to Mammee Bay. It makes Ocho Rios the easiest place to combine with a few days in Kingston.
Ian Fleming International. The small airport at Boscobel, east of town, is about 15 minutes from Jamaica Inn and Couples Tower Isle, but it mainly handles private and charter flights.
By coach. Knutsford Express serves Ocho Rios from its Drax Hall station just west of town and a stop at the RIU on Mammee Bay, with coaches from Montego Bay airport and Kingston. Its Ocho Rios town office handles courier parcels, not passengers. See my Knutsford Express guide for fares, then take a licensed taxi from the station.
Getting around. Licensed taxis carry red PP plates; agree the fare before you get in. Route taxis run along the coast road between town and the attractions west of it.

Ocho Rios, for most trips: it’s closer to the falls, rivers and restaurants and has more open resorts right now. Runaway Bay is quieter and a little closer to Montego Bay airport, which suits families who plan to stay put.

On cruise-ship days, when shore excursions head straight for Dunn’s River and the main attractions. Locals go early in the morning, or pick a day with no ship in port.
It’s the most central base on the north coast. Kingston is about 90 minutes away over the toll highway, and Nine Mile, the Blue Hole and the rivers are all easy day trips.
