My local take
Ocho Rios Bay Beach is the town beach, and most of us still call it Turtle Beach. It is run by the Urban Development Corporation, or UDC, the same government agency that runs Dunn’s River Falls, and it sits on the bay between the cruise pier and the hotels along Main Street. The UDC still describes the eastern neighbor by its old name, Sunset Jamaica Grande; that site is now Moon Palace Jamaica. The UDC reopened the beach on November 11, 2025, after Hurricane Melissa, and it lists daily hours and entry fees on its attractions page.
It suits cruise passengers who want sand and sea without booking a tour, and people staying in town who want a managed beach with changing facilities and someone collecting a fee at the gate. It is not a quiet beach. It is a busy town beach with water sports operators, music and a snack shop, and it fills up on cruise days and weekends. My take: for a few hours in the water on a cruise day, this is the simplest option in Ocho Rios. If you want a prettier, quieter stretch of sand, spend the money on a resort day pass or a catamaran trip instead.
Close by: Mahogany Beach, the livelier local beach west of town, and Dunn’s River Falls, also run by the UDC. If you have a car and a full day, Puerto Seco Beach in Discovery Bay is a bigger beach club, but check its status first. For the wider area, see our Ocho Rios guide.
How to get there
The beach is in the middle of Ocho Rios, with the cruise pier at its western end, so if your ship is docked in Ocho Rios you can walk there. From the cruise terminal, head east along the waterfront toward the hotels. From the hotels on Main Street, including Moon Palace Jamaica next door, it is a short walk. From resorts east of town, take a taxi into Ocho Rios.
From Montego Bay it is a long drive along the north coast, roughly two hours or more depending on traffic, so it only makes sense as part of a full Ocho Rios day. From Runaway Bay, allow about half an hour by road.
What to expect
The UDC describes white sand, clear water and a view across the bay. Facilities listed are a snack shop and picnic areas, plus water sports run by concessionaires, which include motorized rides. Those are paid separately from your entry ticket, so agree the price and time before you start. The UDC also rents the beach for events such as weddings, parties, church outings and family days, so part of it may be busy with a group when you arrive.
Entry is paid at the gate. The UDC lists separate rates for residents and non-residents, and resident rates are for people who can show they live in Jamaica. Hours are 8:30 am to 4 pm daily, so this is a daytime beach, not a sunset spot.
Local tips
- On a cruise day, go early, right after you leave the ship. The beach is busiest in the middle of the day.
- Bring small US bills or Jamaican dollars for the entry fee, water sports and snacks.
- If you want a jet ski or boat ride, use an operator working from the beach and agree the price and time before you get on.
- Pack reef-safe sunscreen and water shoes; the town bay is shallow near the shore but you are in the sun all day.
- Keep an eye on the time. With the pier right there, it is easy to stay too long, and the ship won't wait.
Before you go
- It gets crowded when ships are in and on weekends and public holidays.
- It is a town beach in a working harbor, with cruise ships and boats close by. Don’t expect a secluded resort beach.
- Water sports and food cost extra, and beach vendors will offer you rides and souvenirs. A polite “no thanks” is enough.
- Closing time is 4 pm, earlier than many visitors expect.
- Keep valuables to a minimum and don’t leave bags alone on the sand.
