Where to stay on the South Coast
The South Coast, mostly in St Elizabeth, is Jamaica at its most local, with small guest houses in Treasure Beach and YS Falls and the Black River nearby. It suits travelers who want space and local life over nightlife.

Is the South Coast right for you?
The South Coast suits travelers who want Jamaica at its most local: fishing villages, small guest houses, long open roads, fried fish on the beach and no resort strip in sight. It suits a second or third trip to Jamaica, couples and families happy with simple places to stay, and anyone who would rather talk to the boat captain than the activities desk. Skip it if you want an all-inclusive with everything on site, nightlife, or a short trip, because it’s a long drive from either airport.
Treasure Beach, YS Falls and Pelican Bar are all open. St Elizabeth took some of the worst damage on the island in the 2025 hurricane, and not everything is back to normal: the Black River Safari is running with a smaller fleet, so keep your plans loose and ask locally what’s open on the day.
The places to stay are small, and the one big resort, Sandals South Coast at Whitehouse in Westmoreland, is due to reopen on November 18, 2026. The Tourist Board’s reopening list shows Jakes in Treasure Beach and Bluefields Bay Villas in Westmoreland open, among others. This site concentrates on resorts, so I don’t have full guides to them yet; book direct and check meals and transfers, since most aren’t all-inclusive.
My take: come for at least three nights, stay in Treasure Beach, and do the rest as day trips. Put the Black River and YS Falls together on one day, add the Appleton Estate rum tour if you like rum, and keep one late afternoon free for a boat out to Pelican Bar. If you’re driving east, Lovers’ Leap for the view and Little Ochie at Alligator Pond for fish are both worth the detour.
Treasure Beach or Black River?
A run of small bays and fishing villages along one main road, with guest houses, villas and a few small hotels, beach cook shops and the boats out to Pelican Bar. It’s the easy base: walkable, friendly and the closest thing the South Coast has to a visitor village, with Lovers’ Leap about 20 minutes east by car. Pick it if you want to settle in for a few nights.
Black River, the parish capital, sits at the river mouth where the safari boats go out, with YS Falls and Appleton Estate inland. The town has few places to stay, so most visitors come on day trips rather than staying. It’s the better side if you’re driving through from Negril or Montego Bay and want to do the falls and the river on the same day.

Getting to South Coast
From Montego Bay airport. Sangster International (MBJ) is the usual way in. Allow roughly two hours to Black River and two and a half to Treasure Beach, with the last stretch on country roads. Sandals South Coast at Whitehouse is about 90 minutes from the airport by Sandals transfer.
From Negril and Kingston. From Negril, allow roughly an hour and a half to Black River and two hours to Treasure Beach. From Kingston, Treasure Beach is about three hours by road through Mandeville.
By coach. Knutsford Express has stations at Savanna-la-Mar, at Luana Pen near Black River and in Mandeville, but none in Treasure Beach, and its coaches don’t stop between stations. Check which routes serve your station on the Knutsford booking form, then arrange a taxi or a pickup from your guest house for the last stretch. See my Knutsford Express guide for how booking works.
Drivers and tours. There’s no direct public transport from the resort areas to Treasure Beach. A pre-booked private driver or a licensed JUTA taxi is the easy option, and the Black River Safari and Appleton Estate both sell tours with transport from Montego Bay or Negril.
On the road. Sections of the coast road and some St Elizabeth roads are still being repaired, so leave extra time. If you don’t know the hill roads, don’t drive them after dark.
Questions people ask
Is the South Coast of Jamaica worth visiting?
Yes, for a slower, more local trip: fishing villages, Treasure Beach, YS Falls and the Black River. It isn’t the place for an all-inclusive week or nightlife.
How far is Treasure Beach from Montego Bay airport?
Roughly two and a half hours by road, and about two hours from Negril. There’s no direct public transport, so book a driver or a transfer.
When does Sandals South Coast reopen?
Sandals says it reopens on November 18, 2026, and it’s taking bookings for stays from that date.
Can you visit YS Falls and the Black River in one day?
Yes. YS Falls is roughly half an hour inland from Black River, and Appleton’s booking partner and the safari operator both sell combined day trips with transport from Montego Bay and Negril.
Where should I stay on the South Coast?
Treasure Beach, for most visitors. It has the most places to stay and you can walk between the bays, with Black River, YS Falls and Pelican Bar all within day-trip range.
