My local take

Appleton Estate has made rum in the Nassau Valley since 1749, and the official booking partner calls it the oldest sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica still in continuous production. The visitor tour is now named the Joy Spence Appleton Estate Rum Experience, after the estate’s master blender. The official site lists regular opening hours, and as of October 8, 2026 the booking partner is taking bookings for timed tours through October.

It suits anyone curious about how Jamaican rum is made, from cane to barrel to glass. It’s a polished, brand-run tour rather than a rough country distillery, with an air-conditioned welcome center, a restaurant and a gift shop. My take: if you’re doing one rum tour in Jamaica, make it this one, because this is where Appleton is actually made. Just don’t come for the tasting alone; the tasting is a guided one, not the open bar some older guides describe.

How to get there

The estate is in the Nassau Valley in northern St Elizabeth, inland from the South Coast. From Montego Bay, allow about two hours each way by road, and roughly the same from Negril; those are estimates, not timed routes. YS Falls is about 11 km away as the crow flies, so it’s easy to do both in a day.

The official site links to Chukka for direct bookings and transport to and from the estate. Chukka also sells an entrance-only ticket if you’re driving yourself, and a full-day trip that combines Appleton, YS Falls and the Black River.

Without a car: There's no simple public transport to the estate. Book transport through the official booking partner, take a licensed tour, or hire a JUTA taxi for the day and agree the price first.

What to expect

The tour starts in the welcome center with a complimentary welcome cocktail for guests of legal drinking age, then a short film on the history of rum and the estate. You then walk outside to field stations that show how cane was milled in the 17th century, with a cup of chilled sugar cane juice and a taste of molasses along the way. From there you see the copper pot stills in the distillery and the ageing house, where rum rests in oak barrels.

The tour ends in the tasting room with a guided tasting of three of Appleton’s aged rums, according to the booking partner. Photos are allowed everywhere except in the distillery.

Joy’s Lounge and Bar is a full-service restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, serving Jamaican meals and cocktails, and the gift shop sells the full Appleton range and local crafts. Food and drinks beyond the tour are extra. The entrance-only ticket starts from US$39 per person on the booking site; check current prices on the official site or with the booking partner.

Local tips

  • Book a timed slot if you can. Tours run on the hour from 9 am to 3 pm on the booking site, and walk-ins are welcome, but groups of 15 or more should reserve.

  • Bring a valid photo ID. The booking partner asks for one at check-in, and it’s your proof of age for the tasting.

  • Pick a driver before you go. The tour ends with rum, and the roads in and out of the valley are narrow country roads.

  • Plan lunch at the estate’s restaurant, Joy’s Lounge and Bar. Out in the valley it’s the easy option, and the booking partner suggests carrying cash or a card for food and gifts.

  • Do YS Falls in the morning and Appleton after lunch, or the other way round. Both close admission in mid-afternoon.

Before you go

  • It’s closed on Sundays and Mondays; the official hours are Tuesday to Saturday only.
  • The booking partner says some sections of the tour aren’t wheelchair accessible.
  • Children can join, but the tasting is for adults 18 and over only.
