My local take
Despite the name, Sandals Dunn’s River isn’t at the falls. It’s on Mammee Bay, west of Ocho Rios, on a quieter beach of its own. The building has a long history here, but Sandals bought it back, renovated it extensively and reopened it in 2023, so it’s the newest-feeling Sandals in Jamaica: airy, modern, with a chain of pools that runs through the middle. My take: it suits couples who want a mid-sized, stylish resort with plenty of restaurants, without the scale of Sandals Ochi.
The trick is that you get Ochi too. Guests have full access to Sandals Ochi’s restaurants and bars, so your 12 restaurants become many more, and golf at Upton is included. Sandals is adults only, every guest must be 18 or older, and the resort is designed for couples.
If it’s not quite right, look at Sandals Ochi, the big sister resort with a beach club and 105 pools, or Sandals Royal Plantation, the small all-butler resort, both in Ocho Rios. Rooms
Room names follow the wings: Travertine, Mammee Bay and Tufa Terrace. Every room listed has a king bed. Entry-level Travertine Luxury rooms face the garden. Club Level rooms and junior suites add balconies, ocean views and Tranquility soaking tubs; the Travertine beachfront rooms are the ones on the sand. At the Butler level there are beachfront and ocean-view one-bedroom suites, Tufa Terrace swim-up suites, and SkyPool suites with an elevated infinity pool, which Sandals says were Jamaica’s first. The Coyaba Rondoval villas are round, with a private pool; the Sky versions add a rooftop terrace with a telescope for stargazing.
Food & drink
Sandals lists 12 restaurants and nine bars. Dinner choices include Cascata (Italian), Hanami (sushi), Banyu (Pan-Asian), L’Amande (French, reservation required), Edessa (Mediterranean) and Zuka (South American). For lunch there’s the Jerk Shack, Galene seaside grill and the Saltaire buffet, plus Isola pizzeria and Blum for Blue Mountain coffee. Dunn’s Rum Club pours Appleton cocktails into the night, with pool and Jamaican-rules dominoes. Sandals’ evening dress code applies at some restaurants: for men, long pants or jeans and dress shoes or sandals, with no flip-flops or sneakers. My take: start at the Jerk Shack, and save a night for Ochi’s restaurants.
Pool & beach
The resort is built around a chain of pools that Sandals says flows like its namesake river, with two pools and two whirlpools in all, and a secluded beach on Mammee Bay. Scuba is included for certified divers, along with snorkeling and unlimited water sports. If you want a bigger pool scene, Sandals Ochi’s 105 pools are open to you.

The resort is on Mammee Bay Road, between Ocho Rios and Runaway Bay. Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ) is about 30 minutes away, with flights on Wednesdays and Saturdays, including American Airlines from Miami. Most guests fly into Sangster International in Montego Bay (MBJ) or Norman Manley in Kingston (KIN), both about 90 minutes away, and transfers are included.
