My local take

Mystic Mountain is the one Ocho Rios attraction built for thrills rather than water. The Sky Explorer chairlift takes you up the hill, and at the top you have the bobsled, the Raggamuffin coaster, a zipline, E-ATVs, a rope course, a climbing wall and an infinity pool. It suits families with children old enough for the rides, groups, and anyone who wants a view over Ocho Rios bay without a hike.

The park went through a bankruptcy and a short closure before new owners reopened it, and the official site now lists it as open six days a week. My take: if you only have one day in Ocho Rios, do Dunn’s River in the morning and Mystic Mountain after. If you want nature more than rides, a waterfall or the Blue Hole is the better pick.

Nearby guides: Dunn’s River Falls, just down the road, and Konoko Falls for a quieter garden-and-falls stop. For the wider area, see our Ocho Rios guide.

How to get there

The park is on Dunn’s River Road, on the western side of Ocho Rios, on the same stretch of coast as Dunn’s River Falls. From the town center or the cruise pier it is a short taxi ride. From the resorts west of town, such as Sandals Dunn’s River, it is a short drive east.

From Montego Bay, allow roughly two hours each way on the north coast highway, and more from Negril. Many visitors come on a tour with hotel pickup. If you drive, check parking with the park when you book.

Without a car: From Ocho Rios town, take a licensed taxi (JUTA or another red-plate operator) for the short ride west, or book a tour with hotel pickup from Montego Bay or Negril.

What to expect

Every visit starts with the Sky Explorer chairlift, which climbs about 700 feet up the mountain with views over the Caribbean Sea. At the top, the basic Mystic Adventure Pass covers The Rock climbing wall, the Anansi’s Web rope course, the Infinity Pool and the Super Tube slide.

The signature ride is the Jamaican Bobsled, inspired by Jamaica’s Olympic bobsled team: about 3,280 feet of track through the forest, with a hand brake in the sled so you control your speed. The Raggamuffin coaster adds 14 high-speed swings above Ocho Rios. The zipline runs over the canopy and limestone cliffs, and the E-ATVs are fully electric and run on mountain trails. These come in the higher packages, and some packages add a trip to Dunn’s River Falls.

At the top there is a coffee and espresso bar, a pizza counter with personal pizzas and paninis, Jamaican meals such as jerk chicken with rice and peas, the Likkle Licks ice cream stand, a gift shop and an artisan village with local craft makers. The park lists vegan, pescatarian and kids’ meal options. Check current prices on the official site before you go, since packages change.

Local tips

  • Go early. Last admission is 3 pm, and zipline activities stop admitting at 12 pm, so a late arrival can rule the zipline out.

  • Don’t turn up on a Monday: the park is closed. The official site notes when it opens on a public holiday such as Heroes’ Day, so check the contact page first.

  • If you live in Jamaica, book the local packages and bring your ID. They are priced in Jamaican dollars and include unlimited bobsled and Raggamuffin rides.

  • Bring swimwear and a towel if you want the Infinity Pool and Super Tube. They are part of every package.

  • If you plan to do Dunn’s River the same day, compare the combined packages with booking the two separately before you pay.

Before you go

  • The rides and the chairlift are high up and in the open. If you don’t like heights, the chairlift alone may be enough of a challenge.
  • Ocho Rios is a cruise port, and attractions near town get busier on cruise-ship days. Locals plan around the ships.
  • Food, drink, photos and the gift shop are extra on most packages, so carry a card or some cash.
  • Ask about age, height and health limits for the bobsled, Raggamuffin, zipline and E-ATVs when you book. Rules differ by ride.
  • Given the park’s recent closure, book through the official site or a well-known tour company, and confirm your date shortly before you go.
