My local take
Green Grotto is the cave most Jamaican schoolchildren know from a geography or history trip, and it is still the easiest cave on the island to visit. It is a guided walk, not caving: cool limestone chambers named for the green algae on the walls, an underground lake, bats, and the stories of who hid here, from the Tainos and Spanish settlers to people escaping slavery and, later, smugglers.
The attraction was run for years by the government’s Urban Development Corporation, which put it out to lease in 2025. The official Green Grotto website now sends you to Chukka, which runs and books the tours. My take: it is a good half-day for families staying in Runaway Bay, and a fair stop on the coast road between Montego Bay and Ocho Rios. Pair it with a beach afternoon rather than making it a full day.

How to get there
The caves are on the north coast road at Discovery Bay, on the western side of St Ann, between the resort areas of Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. From Runaway Bay resorts such as Franklyn D. Resort and Bahia Principe Escape Runaway Bay, it is a short drive west.
From Ocho Rios, allow roughly 40 to 50 minutes west along the coast road. From Montego Bay, it is roughly an hour east. The Signature Tour does not include transport, but Chukka sells a combined Ocho Rios package with pickup from Ocho Rios, Runaway Bay and Falmouth.
Without a car: Route taxis run along the north coast road between Ocho Rios, Runaway Bay and Discovery Bay, or book a licensed taxi or Chukka's package with pickup.
What to expect
A Chukka guide walks your group through the cave system, which Chukka describes as more than a kilometer of passages and chambers in a flank-margin cave, named for the green algae on its walls. The high point is a still, clear underground lake deep in the cave. Guides cover the cave’s history and its bats and other small creatures.
The UDC described the wider site as 64 acres with two caves, a nature trail, a souvenir shop and a first-aid station. Bring insect repellent, and a card or cash for photos, souvenirs and snacks.
The Signature Tour is sold from US$39.50 per person without transport. Chukka also sells it in a full-day combination with horseback riding, an ATV ride, lunch and a catamaran sail from the base of Dunn’s River Falls.
Local tips
Wear comfortable closed walking shoes. Cave floors can be damp and uneven, and Chukka recommends proper walking shoes.
Book an early slot if you’re combining it with the beach: arrival times start at 8:30 am.
Bring photo ID. Chukka asks for valid picture ID at check-in.
If you’re coming from Montego Bay, stop here on the way to Ocho Rios rather than making a separate trip.
Jamaican residents should ask Chukka about any local rate before booking. The old UDC resident prices may no longer apply.
Cruise passengers: Chukka lists a Green Grotto Caves Express shore excursion from the Montego Bay port, booked through your cruise line, and the cave sits between the Ocho Rios and Falmouth ports. Local knowledge says book an early arrival slot on ship days, when excursion groups come through.
Before you go
- Minimum age is 4.
- Chukka says the tour is not suitable for pregnant women, or for anyone with heart conditions, a history of seizures, or knee or hip injuries.
- There are bats in the cave. They are part of the tour, but tell the guide if that worries anyone in your group.
- Older guides and blog posts list UDC prices and 9 am to 4 pm opening times. The attraction is now booked through Chukka, so use its current times and prices.
