My local take

Turtle River Falls & Gardens sits in the river gorge above Ocho Rios that many Jamaicans still call the Enchanted Gardens, the old resort that closed around 2001. The gardens and the string of cascades on the Turtle River were reopened as a river park under the Turtle River Falls & Gardens name. The honest problem today: I can’t confirm it is operating. Its website no longer loads, and listings online disagree, with some showing it as permanently closed and others still showing hours and prices. The Jamaica Tourist Board’s attractions list shows “Turtle River Park” as open, but that is the free public park in downtown Ocho Rios, not these falls.

My take: don’t build a day around it until you get a clear yes from the park itself. If you want a garden-and-waterfall morning in Ocho Rios that is easier to plan, Konoko Falls offers the same mix of gardens and cascades, and Dunn’s River Falls is the big climb. If Turtle River confirms it is open, it suits people who want a quieter, shadier walk than Dunn’s River.

How to get there

The park is on Eden Bower Road, which climbs into the hills from Ocho Rios town. From the town center or the cruise pier it is a short taxi ride, roughly 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic. From the resorts east of town, such as Sandals Royal Plantation, allow a little longer.

From Montego Bay it is roughly a two-hour drive east along the north coast highway. From Negril, allow three hours or more.

Without a car: Take a licensed JUTA taxi from Ocho Rios town and agree the fare, and a pickup time, before you leave. For a hillside stop like this, that is simpler than piecing it together by route taxi.

What to expect

When it was running, the park was described as about 14 acres of river gorge with 14 cascades on the Turtle River, a walk-in aviary and a swimming pool, with an optional guided tour of about an hour and 15 minutes. A path along the river led to the largest cascade at the top, with a deep pool where visitors could climb the falls.

Moon Jamaica’s listing mentions a snack bar for drinks and says visitors could bring their own food. The gardens mix flowering and fruit trees, ferns and palms with rainforest plants.

None of that is confirmed as current. Facilities, the aviary and guided tours may have changed.

Local tips

  • Message the park through its Facebook page, or ask your hotel’s tour desk, and get a clear answer on whether it is open before you set off.

  • Don’t confuse it with Turtle River Park, the free public park in downtown Ocho Rios. Taxi drivers will know the difference if you say Eden Bower Road or the old Enchanted Gardens.

  • If you go, wear water shoes with grip. River rocks under falling water are slippery.

  • If it’s open, go in the morning on a weekday, before the heat and the cruise-day traffic in town.

Before you go

  • If you arrive and there is no proper ticket office or uniformed staff, I wouldn’t pay anyone at the gate for a tour.
  • The park is on a hillside with steps, so it is not suited to anyone with limited mobility.
