My local take

Sandals Negril is the beach Sandals. It sits on the widest stretch of Seven Mile Beach, and the day is built around the water: water skiing, wakeboarding, Hobie Cats and scuba for certified divers are all included. My take: it suits couples who want a proper beach and a sunset every evening more than they want a different restaurant every night. With eight restaurants, it has half the choice of Sandals Ochi.

Negril is also the easiest place in Jamaica to step outside the gate. The beach runs for miles past bars and small hotels, and the West End cliffs and Rick’s Café are a short taxi ride away. Sandals is adults only, every guest must be 18 or older, and the resort is designed for couples.

If it’s not quite right, look at Sandals Ochi, the much bigger sister resort in Ocho Rios with 16 restaurants, or The Cliff Hotel on Negril’s West End if you’d rather have the cliffs than the beach. Traveling with children? Beaches Negril is the family sister resort on the same beach. More options: the best adults-only all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica.

What stands out

  • Right on the widest stretch of Seven Mile Beach, facing west for the sunsets.
  • Water skiing, wakeboarding, Hobie Cats, kayaks and scuba for certified divers are included.
  • Room choice from Luxury rooms up to swim-up, two-story and SkyPool Butler Suites.
  • Tips, taxes, Wi-Fi, the airport arrival lounge and round-trip transfers are included.
  • Easy to get out and see Negril: the beach, the West End cliffs and Rick's Café are close.

What to know before booking

  • Eight restaurants is fewer than the Ocho Rios Sandals, so a long stay can feel repetitive.
  • About 75 minutes from Montego Bay airport by transfer.
  • Adults only (18+) and designed for couples: not for families or a group of friends.
  • Spa treatments and off-site tours cost extra, and some dinners need a reservation.

Rooms

Sandals sorts the rooms into three levels: Sandals Luxury, Club Sandals and Butler Elite. Almost every room listed has a king bed. Entry-level Luxury rooms face the garden; most Club Level rooms are beachfront, some with walkout patios or soaking tubs. The Butler categories are where this resort stands out: beachfront swim-up suites on the lagoon pool, two-story Butler Villa Suites, a honeymoon suite with a private pool, and new SkyPool Butler Suites with a private elevated pool. Butler suites include 24-hour in-room dining. Check the view in the room name when you book, because it ranges from tropical garden to beachfront.

Food & drink

Sandals lists eight restaurants and five bars. Bayside is the buffet by day and French-Italian at night, Kimonos does teppanyaki (it books up, so reserve early), Brava serves Spanish tapas at dinner (reservation required), Sundowner serves Caribbean food by the sea, Perla does Mexican lunches and late-night bites, and there’s seafood at Barefoot by the Sea, Neapolitan pizza at Bella Napoli and coffee and ice cream at Crema. A culinary concierge desk handles reservations and dietary needs; special preparations such as kosher meals need a month’s notice. Sandals’ evening dress code applies at some restaurants: for men, long pants or jeans and dress shoes or sandals, with no flip-flops or sneakers. My take: book Sundowner for a sunset early in your stay.

Pool & beach

The beach is the main event: Seven Mile Beach is soft sand and calm, clear water most of the year, and this is its widest stretch. The resort has four pools, three whirlpools and two swim-up bars. Water skiing, wakeboarding, Hobie Cats, paddleboards, kayaks, snorkeling and glass-bottom boats are included, as is scuba for certified divers.

Location

The resort is on Norman Manley Boulevard, the road that runs behind Seven Mile Beach. It’s 45.2 miles (72.7 km) from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, and Sandals puts the transfer at about 75 minutes. Transfers are included. Locals will tell you to watch at least one sunset from the West End cliffs: Rick’s Café is the famous spot. A boat trip out to Floyd’s Pelican Bar is a good day out too. See where to stay in Negril for the wider area.
