My local take

Swept Away is the bigger of the two Couples resorts in Negril: 312 suites on 19 acres of Seven Mile Beach, with a 10-acre sports and fitness complex that Couples calls the largest in Jamaica. Tennis, pickleball, squash, a proper gym and a lap pool are all there, with lessons included. My take: it suits active couples who want to train in the morning and lie on the beach all afternoon. If you’re traveling with children or friends, it’s couples only, so look elsewhere.

Worth knowing: unlike the other three Couples resorts, there’s no au naturel area here, which some couples will see as a plus. Seven Mile Beach is a long, walkable stretch shared with other hotels, beach bars and vendors, so expect more going on along the sand than at a closed-off bay. Couples doesn’t allow tipping, and spa treatments are extra.

If it’s not quite right, look at its sister resort Couples Negril, smaller and on calm Bloody Bay, or Sandals Negril further along Seven Mile Beach, with water sports included. More options: the best adults-only all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica.

What stands out

  • A 10-acre sports complex with tennis, pickleball, squash, racquetball, a gym and a lap pool, lessons included.
  • Right on Seven Mile Beach, with flag service for drinks on the sand.
  • Seven restaurants and eight bars, from Jamaican food at Scotch Bonnet to fine dining at Feathers.
  • All 312 rooms are suites, in low-rise buildings.
  • Scuba, golf green fees, water sports and a catamaran sail are included, and there's no tipping.

What to know before booking

  • Couples only, so no children, singles or groups of friends.
  • Garden Verandah Suites sit along the perimeter near the entrance and the road.
  • Atrium, Beachfront and Premier Beachfront Suites have no TV, by design.
  • Spa treatments cost extra, and golf caddies and carts are paid at the course.
  • Transfers from Kingston airport are discounted, not free.

Rooms

All 312 rooms are suites, in bungalow-style buildings running from the gardens to the beach. Every suite has a king bed, a furnished balcony or patio, a personalized minibar and a coffee maker. Garden Verandah Suites face the gardens near the entrance and road, Great House and Ocean Verandah Suites have partial sea views, and Beachfront Verandah Suites are right on the sand. The Atrium, Beachfront and Premier Beachfront Suites are classic Caribbean style, with cedar shutters and no TV. My take: if you’re a light sleeper, pay for a suite away from the road.

Food & drink

Couples lists seven restaurants and eight bars. The Palms does the buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. Feathers is the formal option, with an elegant-casual dress code (no shorts, T-shirts or flip-flops). Lemon Grass serves Asian dishes by the main pool and needs a reservation. Patois Patio does Mediterranean-style dinners and wood-oven pizza, Scotch Bonnet serves jerk chicken, jerk pork and patties, and Seagrape Cafe does juices and salads. My take: Scotch Bonnet is where to get your jerk fix without leaving the resort.

Pool & beach

There are three pools, including the main pool overlooking the beach and the Cabana Grill pool with its swim-up bar, plus five Jacuzzis and a 25-meter lap pool at the sports complex. On the beach, bar staff bring drinks when you plant a flag in the sand. Water sports include scuba, glass-bottom boat snorkel trips, Hobie Cat sailing, kayaks, water skiing, windsurfing and paddleboards. Topless sunbathing is allowed on the main beach; au naturel sunbathing isn’t allowed anywhere at Swept Away.

Location

Swept Away is on Seven Mile Beach, the long main beach of Negril. Couples puts the drive from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay at about an hour and a half, and the transfer is included. Golf is at Negril Hills Golf Club, with free transport. The resort runs free trips to Margaritaville and to a cliff-top sunset bar in the West End, near Rick’s Café. For a day trip, YS Falls is on the south coast. See where to stay in Negril for the wider area.
