My local take

Royalton Hideaway Negril isn’t a separate hotel down the road. It’s an adults-only section of 140 suites inside Royalton Negril, a family resort of 407 suites on the same stretch of Seven Mile Beach. Hideaway has its own lobby, an adults-only swim-up bar, pool and beach area, and one restaurant, Dorado, that only Hideaway guests can use. Everything else, from the steakhouse to the teppanyaki and the sports bar, is at Royalton Negril, where families eat too.

My take: it suits couples who want an adults-only pool and beach to come back to, but still want a dozen places to eat. If you want no children on the property at all, it’s the wrong pick. The access runs one way: you can use Royalton Negril, but its guests can’t come into your Hideaway areas.

Rooms

All 140 rooms are suites, with a DreamBed, rain shower, Jacuzzi soaker tub, balcony or terrace and 24-hour room service. Luxury junior suites are 603 sq ft, with a king or two queens, in ocean view or swim-out. The presidential one-bedroom (1,227 sq ft) adds a separate sitting area and guest bathroom, and the penthouse one-bedroom (1,238 sq ft) has an outdoor Jacuzzi on the terrace. Diamond Club versions add a butler, nightly turndown, preferred room locations and access to the Diamond Club lounge, pool and beach area.

Food & drink

Hideaway guests get Dorado, a seafood grill near the beach serving ceviche, salads and grilled fish at every meal. Hideaway’s list also includes Ocean Point Bistro, a beachfront terrace with French-style cooking. The rest are at Royalton Negril: Gourmet Marché buffet, Calypso for Jamaican food, Armadillo Tex-Mex, Grazie Italian, Hunter Steakhouse, Zen teppanyaki and sushi, SCORE sports bar, the Jerk Hut and Scoops for coffee and gelato. The C/X chef’s table costs extra. My take: start with Calypso for a Jamaican dinner, then get out one evening for fish at a West End cookshop.

Pool & beach

Hideaway has its own infinity pool, an adults-only swim-up bar and a private stretch of Seven Mile Beach with waiter service, cold towels and afternoon hors d’oeuvres. Private cabanas cost extra. Snorkeling, kayaks, paddleboards and an introductory scuba lesson are included, and you can also use the pools at Royalton Negril.

Location

The resort is on the beach side of Negril, and Royalton puts the drive from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay at 75 to 90 minutes. Locals will tell you to catch at least one sunset on the West End cliffs, at Rick’s Café or one of the quieter cliff bars. YS Falls is the best day trip inland.
