My local take

Couples Negril sits on Bloody Bay, the quieter, calmer bay at the north end of Negril, past the busy middle of Seven Mile Beach. It’s a mid-sized resort, with 234 rooms on 18 acres, and the mood is social: beach volleyball, dance classes, a piano bar and a show most nights. My take: it suits couples who want a relaxed beach week with plenty included and a friendly crowd, without the scale of the big chains. If you’re traveling with children or friends, it’s couples only, so look elsewhere.

Worth knowing: Couples doesn’t allow tipping, and scuba, golf, water sports and a sunset catamaran sail are in the price. Spa treatments, private beach dinners and the bigger island tours are extra. Bloody Bay is a short drive from the Seven Mile Beach strip, so you’ll lean on the resort’s free runs to Margaritaville and the West End sunset bar, or a taxi.

Rooms

Couples lists 234 rooms and suites, all with a king bed, a furnished balcony or patio, a personalized minibar, a coffee maker and a zero-entry shower. Deluxe Garden rooms sit further from the beach, Deluxe Ocean rooms have partial sea views, and Deluxe Beachfront rooms are closest to the sand. The Garden and Beachfront Suites add a seating area and a bigger bathroom with double vanities, plus hors d’oeuvres delivered each evening and an in-suite dinner menu (ordered a day ahead).

Food & drink

Couples lists six restaurants and five bars. Cassava Terrace does the buffet breakfasts and open-air lunches and dinners. Otaheite serves Jamaican dishes, needs a reservation and has an elegant-casual dress code (no shorts, T-shirts or flip-flops). Lychee is Asian with an open kitchen, the Beach Grill turns into Heliconia, a Mediterranean-style grill, at night, and Java Café serves Blue Mountain coffee. The Piano Bar runs sing-alongs and dance nights. My take: book Otaheite early in your stay, so you have time to go back.

Pool & beach

The main pool overlooks the beach and has a swim-up bar, and a smaller, quieter pool sits by the Treehouse. There are four Jacuzzis. Water sports include scuba, glass-bottom boat snorkel trips, Hobie Cat sailing, kayaks, water skiing, windsurfing and paddleboards. The au naturel area is a small, semi-private stretch just off the main beach.

Location

Bloody Bay is at the north end of Negril, in Hanover, a short drive from the main Seven Mile Beach strip. Couples puts the drive from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay at about an hour and a half, and the transfer is included. Golf is at Negril Hills Golf Club, with free transport.
