My local take

Jamwest is what happens when a Westmoreland race track grows into a full adventure park. It started as the Jamwest Speedway, a drag strip, and the owners later built a circuit around it, then added ATV trails, zip lines, horse rides, a safari tour and a water park on the same property in Old Hope, near Little London. The park describes itself as about 20 minutes from Negril town. It is not a beach day and it is not pretty in the postcard sense: it is dirt trails, mangroves, a fishing village and a lot of engine noise.

It suits groups, families with older children and couples who are restless after two days on a lounger. The ATV ride is the main event: guided, on automatic quads or buggies, out to Salmon Point fishing village and back. If you want speed, the Driving Experience puts you in real sports cars on the circuit with an instructor, which almost nothing else in the Caribbean offers. My take: pick one activity, maybe two. The combo deals look like better value, but two back-to-back tours plus transfers is a long, dusty day in the heat. Jamwest was on the Jamaica Tourist Board’s list of open Negril attractions after Hurricane Melissa, and its booking pages are live.

Balance it with the coast: spend the next day on Seven Mile Beach, and finish an evening at Rick’s Café on the West End cliffs. The Blue Hole near Brighton is only a few kilometers away, but I couldn’t confirm it is open, so read that page before you plan around it. For hotels and the rest of the area, see my Negril guide.

How to get there

From Negril: Jamwest is inland, east of town on the Little London side, roughly 13 km from the Negril roundabout in a straight line (map distance). Jamwest gives the drive as about 20 minutes from the town center. Most people don’t drive themselves: Jamwest provides two-way transport from select hotels in the Negril resort area, so a stay on the beach strip, such as Royalton Negril, usually means a pickup 30 to 60 minutes before your tour time.

From Montego Bay and Lucea: Jamwest also lists pickups from Montego Bay resort-area hotels and from the Grand Palladium in Lucea. From Montego Bay it is a long transfer each way, so treat it as a full-day trip.

From an Airbnb or villa: Jamwest says it can arrange a pickup at a central location; call the tour office to set it up.

What to expect

Arrival. Tours start at the clubhouse, which has a restaurant, bar and gift shop. You sign a waiver, get your safety gear and a briefing, and every activity is guided. Jamwest says it has lockers for a small fee, and that lunch is not included unless the tour says so.

ATV. The automatic quads and dune buggies go out on dirt trails through sandy washes, rocky hills and mangroves to the fishing village at Salmon Point, with a stop on the beach and a soak in the mineral bath on the way back. Jamwest lists it at about an hour of riding, with a separate child rate. There is no doubling up on a single quad; children 6 and up can ride with an adult in the side-by-sides or double-seat quads. Jamwest’s booking pages also list a short go-kart session on a miniature version of the speedway as part of some combos.

Zip line, horses, Push Kart and JamCulture. The zip line has eight 60-foot towers and about 2,450 feet of line, including a racing zip where two people ride side by side. The horseback ride goes down to Salmon Point and into the sea. The Push Kart is a half-mile gravity sled run on rails through the forest. JamCulture is a 90-minute 4×4 safari through wetland, forest and grassland with a cultural stop and food and rum tasting.

Race cars and the water park. The Driving Experience gives you three sessions of five laps in three sports cars with an instructor (driver’s license required), and family can watch from the tower at no charge. The Water Park day pass covers the pool and water slide, kids’ play area, mineral bath, bird aviary and petting zoo. Combo deals bundle two or more activities. Jamwest lists current prices on its website; check before you book.

Local tips

  • Book directly with Jamwest or through your hotel tour desk, and confirm your pickup time the day before. Jamwest asks guests to confirm pickups with its office.
  • Wear clothes you don't mind getting muddy, and bring a change of clothes and swimwear for the mineral bath and pool. Water shoes work for ATV, horses and the Push Kart; closed sneakers for the zip line.
  • If you live in Jamaica, ask for the local residents rate and bring your Jamaican ID. Jamwest lists its local rates in Jamaican dollars on a separate residents page.
  • Don't cancel just because it's raining. Jamwest runs every tour except the zip line rain or shine, and says many guests prefer the ATV ride in the wet.
  • Bring some cash for tips, photos and the bar. Jamwest takes Visa and MasterCard but not American Express.

Before you go

  • ATV riding, race cars and zip lines carry real risk. Listen to the briefing, keep your helmet on and stay behind your guide.
  • Most tours have weight and age limits. Check them on the tour page before you book, especially with children.
  • Cancellation terms are strict: full refund with 48 hours’ notice, 50% with 24 to 48 hours, nothing with less than 24 hours.
  • Expect dust, heat and noise. On race days the speedway is busy and loud.
  • Prices on Jamwest’s own pages can differ from what tour resellers charge. Compare before you pay.
