My local take

Status: unconfirmed. I couldn’t confirm that the Blue Hole Mineral Spring is open since Hurricane Melissa. Its web address now points only to its Facebook page, which I couldn’t read, and I found no Tourist Board notice or Jamaican news report about it either way. It isn’t on the Tourist Board’s reopenings list. Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Westmoreland, the same parish, in October 2025. Message the Blue Hole on its Facebook page, or ask your hotel tour desk, before you go.

Which Blue Hole is this? Jamaica has more than one. This page is about the Blue Hole near Brighton, in the hills inland from Negril, where people jump into a spring-fed pool at the bottom of a limestone sinkhole or climb down a ladder. It is not the Blue Hole at Island Gully Falls near Ocho Rios, a river with waterfalls and pools in St Ann, several hours’ drive away; for that one, see my Ocho Rios Blue Hole guide. Tour sellers mix the two up, so check the pickup area and route before you pay. My take: if it’s confirmed open, it is a fun half-day for strong swimmers. If you can’t confirm it, Negril has open alternatives below.

Open alternatives near Negril: Rick’s Café for cliff jumping into the sea on the West End, and Jamwest, a few kilometers away, which has a mineral bath and a water park along with its ATV tours. Or keep it simple on Seven Mile Beach. For hotels and the rest of the area, see my Negril guide.

How to get there

From Negril: The Blue Hole is inland in the Brighton district, about 9 km south-east of the Negril roundabout in a straight line (map distance). The roads into the district are narrow country roads, so the drive takes longer than the distance suggests. Most visitors go with a driver or a tour from their hotel.

From Montego Bay: Negril is roughly 80 km west of Montego Bay along the coast road (approximate); the Blue Hole adds a further inland drive. Some private tours from Montego Bay pair it with Rick’s Café. Confirm the Blue Hole is open before you book one.

What to expect

What it is. A natural sinkhole in the limestone with clear, spring-fed water at the bottom. Visitors jump in from the edge of the opening or climb down a ladder to get in. The site is run as a private attraction, with an entry fee, rather than as a public park.

What I couldn’t confirm. Current opening hours, entry prices, which facilities are working and whether there was storm damage. Older listings mention a bar and a swimming pool on site, but I found nothing recent and official, so I’ve left hours and prices off this page. Ask the operator when you check the status.

Local tips

  • Before you set out, message the Blue Hole Mineral Spring on its Facebook page or have your hotel call ahead to confirm it is open and what entry costs.
  • If a tour is sold as "Blue Hole", ask which one. From Negril or Montego Bay, make sure it isn't the Ocho Rios Blue Hole, a very long day's drive away.
  • Only jump if you are a strong swimmer, and go in feet first. Use the ladder if you're unsure.
  • Carry cash in small notes and bring water shoes for wet, slippery rock.

Before you go

  • Status since Hurricane Melissa is unconfirmed. Don’t plan your only free day around it until you’ve heard back from the operator.
  • The water is deep. Children and weak swimmers should wear life jackets or stay out.
  • Wet limestone is slippery and sharp. Take the ladder and the edges slowly.
  • It is a drive into the countryside on narrow roads. Agree taxi fares and the return time in advance.

It is in the Brighton district, about 9 km south-east of the Negril roundabout in a straight line (map distance). The narrow country roads make the drive slower than that suggests.
