My local take

Sunset at the Palms is one of the small all-inclusives on Negril’s Norman Manley Boulevard: 85 treehouse-style rooms raised on stilts in ten acres of gardens, adults only, with its own beach club across the road on Seven Mile Beach. My take: it suits couples who want something quieter and more personal than the big Negril resorts, and who like the idea of waking up in the trees rather than on the sand.

Be clear on the trade-offs before you book. Every room faces the gardens, not the sea, and the beach is a two-minute walk across the road, with crossing guards. Rooms are up 10 to 12 steps, and there are no wheelchair-accessible rooms. Evenings are low-key, with piano at the Irie Martini Bar and live reggae some nights; for a late night out, the West End and the Seven Mile Beach bars are a short taxi ride away.

If it’s not quite right, Couples Negril is a couples-only all-inclusive right on the water at Bloody Bay, and Sandals Negril sits on the beach side of the same road, with eight restaurants. More options: the best adults-only all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica.

What stands out

  • Small and adults-only: 85 rooms on ten acres of gardens.
  • Treehouse-style rooms with a balcony daybed, a minibar restocked daily, and robes and slippers.
  • A personal concierge for every guest, for dinner bookings, excursions and special occasions.
  • Free round-trip airport transfers on longer stays, if you send flight details 60 days ahead.
  • Private beach club with its own bar and grill, loungers, towels and showers.

What to know before booking

  • No beachfront or ocean-view rooms: all 85 rooms look onto the gardens, and the beach is across the road.
  • Rooms are up 10 to 12 steps, and there are no wheelchair-accessible rooms.
  • Only one pool, and the two à la carte dinners run three nights a week each, by reservation.
  • Room service food is included, but every delivery costs US$15.
  • Most rooms have one king bed; rooms with two beds are very limited and there are no rollaways.

Rooms

All 85 rooms are treehouse-style, raised about 8 feet off the ground and reached by 10 to 12 steps, with wooden interiors and garden views. Treetop Superior rooms sit along the road between the gardens and the beach; Treetop Deluxe rooms are deeper in the gardens beside the Royal Palm Preserve. Inside they’re identical, and both take two adults. The three One-Bedroom Treetop Suites have a ground-floor lounge with two daybeds and a bathroom, and an upstairs king bedroom with a second bathroom, for up to four adults. Every room has air conditioning, satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, a minibar restocked daily, a kettle, a safe, and robes and slippers. Most have king beds; ask for two beds as soon as you book.

Food & drink

The resort lists five restaurants and three bars. Palm Grove is the buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with late-night snacks until 1 am. Lotus Leaf (Monday, Thursday and Saturday) and Chef’s Showcase (Tuesday, Friday and Sunday) are the two reservation-only dinners, both with an elegant dress code. Palm Breeze Beach Bar & Grill does jerk by day, with a beach barbecue on Wednesdays, and Blue Coffee Café serves Blue Mountain coffee. Drinks are at the Bamboo Pool swim-up bar and the Irie Martini Bar. My take: plan your week around the two à la carte nights, because each runs only three nights a week.

Pool & beach

There’s one large pool with the Bamboo swim-up bar and a hot tub. The beach club is on Seven Mile Beach, about two minutes’ walk from the lobby across Norman Manley Boulevard, with crossing guards, its own bar and grill, loungers, towels, restrooms and showers. Non-motorized water sports are included, and scuba and excursions can be arranged through your concierge.

Location

Sunset at the Palms is on Norman Manley Boulevard, the road that runs behind Seven Mile Beach. Transfers come from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, and they’re free on longer stays if you send your flight details 60 days ahead. There’s no ATM on site, but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere in Negril. From here you’re close to Seven Mile Beach and a taxi ride from Rick’s Café on the West End cliffs. Locals will tell you to walk the beach at sunset at least once. See where to stay in Negril for the wider area.
