My local take

Royalton Negril is one of the few big family all-inclusives on Seven Mile Beach. It has a kids’ club for ages 4 to 12, a teen lounge for 13 to 17 and a splash pad for the little ones, so it works for families with children of mixed ages. My take: it suits families who want the Negril beach without giving up the clubs and the choice of restaurants a big resort brings.

Be clear on how the grounds work before you book. The adults-only Royalton Hideaway Negril is a resort-within-a-resort on the same property. Hideaway guests can use everything at Royalton Negril, but Hideaway’s own restaurant, pool, swim-up bar and beach area are reserved for Hideaway guests. If you book Royalton Negril, you use Royalton Negril.

If it’s not quite right, look at Beaches Negril, a family all-inclusive further along Seven Mile Beach, or Royalton Blue Waters, the family Royalton near Falmouth with a water park and lazy river. More options: the best all-inclusive family resorts in Jamaica.

What stands out

  • Right on Seven Mile Beach, with full beach service and non-motorized water sports included.
  • Supervised clubs for kids (4 to 12) and teens (13 to 17), plus a splash pad for younger children.
  • Nine restaurants, from a Jamaican dining room (Calypso) and a Jerk Hut to teppanyaki and a steakhouse.
  • Every room is a suite, with family suites of 678 sq ft and two-bedroom presidential suites for bigger groups.
  • Tips, free Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service and a daily-restocked minibar are included.

What to know before booking

  • No water park: the splash pad is the main water play for children.
  • The Hideaway restaurant, pool and beach on the same grounds are off-limits to Royalton Negril guests.
  • Diamond Club guests get their own pool, beach area and bars, so some of the best spots are kept for those who pay to upgrade.
  • The C/X chef's table and spa treatments cost extra.
  • About 75 minutes from Montego Bay airport.

Rooms

All 407 rooms are suites, with a DreamBed, rain shower, balcony or terrace, satellite TV, safe and 24-hour room service. Royalton lists Jacuzzi soaker tubs in presidential suites and up. Luxury junior suites (603 sq ft, king or two queens) come in garden view, ocean view or swim-out and take up to four. Families should look at the 678 sq ft ocean-view family suite, which has a sliding door between the sofa area and the bedroom, or the 1,227 sq ft presidential one-bedroom with two bathrooms. The two-bedroom presidential suite takes up to eight. Diamond Club versions of most suites add butler service and access to the Diamond Club pool, beach area and lounge.

Food & drink

Royalton lists nine restaurants: Gourmet Marché buffet (with a kids’ buffet), Calypso for Jamaican and West Indian food, Armadillo Tex-Mex, Grazie Italian, Hunter Steakhouse, Zen teppanyaki and sushi, SCORE sports bar, a Jerk Hut by the beach in the afternoon and Scoops for coffee and gelato. The C/X Culinary Experience, a seven-course chef’s table, costs extra. Dinner dress codes are resort casual or evening casual. My take: go to the Jerk Hut once for lunch, then get out one evening for jerk on the Negril roadside, where it’s done properly over pimento wood.

Pool & beach

The resort opens straight onto Seven Mile Beach, with beach service, snorkeling, kayaking, sailing and an introductory scuba lesson included. Royalton lists several pools, including an infinity pool, the Dips swim-up bar and private poolside cabanas. Children have a shallow splash pad with fountains and slides. Diamond Club guests have their own pool, beach area and bars, and Hideaway guests have their own adults-only pool and beach area.

Location

The resort is on Norman Manley Boulevard, the beach side of Negril, and Royalton puts the drive from Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay at about 75 minutes. Seven Mile Beach is long and flat, good for walking to the beach bars along the strip. For the sunset, locals head to the West End cliffs and Rick’s Café. YS Falls and the Appleton Estate rum tour make a good day trip inland. See where to stay in Negril for the wider area.
