My local take

Tropical Bay is Riu’s Palace-level resort in Negril, on Bloody Bay, close to Riu Negril. It still takes families, with RIU Land and a children’s pool, but most of its room types are 32 m² junior suites and the evenings lean towards à la carte dinners rather than the RIU Party stage. My take: it’s the one I’d point couples and families with younger children to if they like Riu but want a calmer base. It is not adults only.

On the question of the two Negril Riu resorts sharing: Riu says Tropical Bay guests get free entry to the RIU Party nights at Riu Negril, with transfers included. Riu doesn’t promise anything beyond that, such as using the other hotel’s restaurants or pools, so treat the party as the only confirmed perk and ask at the front desk about anything else.

If it’s not quite right, look at Beaches Negril on Seven Mile Beach for a family resort with more for children, or Hedonism II, also at Negril’s north end, if you’re adults wanting something very different. More options: the best all-inclusive resorts in Negril.

What stands out

  • Most room types are 32 m² junior suites with a sofa, coffee maker and drinks dispenser.
  • On Bloody Bay, away from the busier Seven Mile Beach strip.
  • Six places to eat, including Japanese, fusion and Italian dinners and a jerk grill on the beach at lunch.
  • RIU Land kids' club and a children's pool, so it works for families as well as couples.
  • Free entry to the RIU Party at Riu Negril, with transfers included.
  • Free Wi-Fi throughout and free parking.

What to know before booking

  • Not adults only: expect children around the pools, especially in school vacations.
  • No water park or slides listed; for a Riu with a water park and children welcome, it's Hotel Riu Ocho Rios.
  • About 6 km from Negril town and 80 km from Montego Bay airport, so you'll rely on taxis and a long transfer.
  • The gym is for guests 18 and over, and the à la carte restaurants need a reservation and dinner dress.

Rooms

Riu lists 452 rooms, last refurbished in 2018. The standard doubles are 28 m² with a king bed, but most room types are junior suites of 32 m², with two small doubles (125 cm wide) or a king, a sofa or sofa bed, a coffee maker, minibar and drinks dispenser, satellite TV and a balcony or terrace. You choose garden, partial sea or sea views, and connecting junior suites work for families. The 47 m² suites add a lounge, a bathtub and sea views. Adapted rooms are available for guests with reduced mobility.

Food & drink

Riu lists six places to eat. The Negril buffet serves breakfast (7 to 11 am), lunch and dinner, with live cooking stations. Dinner choices are Krystal (fusion), Rimini (Italian, with a starter buffet), Hakuchi (Japanese, including sushi) and the Pool Restaurant, which is a buffet at lunch and a steakhouse at night. Riu says the à la carte restaurants need a reservation and appropriate dress. My take: don’t skip Parrillada Jerk, the beach grill at lunch (12 to 3 pm). The bars include the Daiquiri lobby bar, Lounge 24 and The Sun swim-up bar.

Pool & beach

The hotel has three outdoor pools, one with The Sun swim-up bar and in-water loungers, and a separate children’s pool. Towels, loungers and umbrellas are free. On the beach you’re on Bloody Bay, which Riu puts at 3 km long, with free kayaks, paddleboards and snorkel gear. Riu notes dive operators about 500 m from the hotel and a golf course about 9 km away.

Location

Tropical Bay is on Norman Manley Boulevard at Bloody Bay, about 6 km from Negril town according to Riu. Riu puts Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay about 80 km away; allow around an hour and a half by road. Locals will tell you this end of Negril is for beach days, and the nightlife and the West End cliffs are a taxi ride away: Rick’s Café for sunset is the classic trip.
