Things to Do in Jamaica with Kids

Jamaica is an easy place to bring children. Jamaicans love kids, and you’ll see whole families out together at the beach, the river and the falls every weekend. This list is for parents planning days out from a resort or a villa. I picked places from local knowledge and the operators’ own information, and I’ve only included places that are open now. Where a place has an age limit, I’ve given it.

One honest point first: with young children, the resort often does most of the work. If you haven’t booked yet, start with my best all-inclusive family resorts in Jamaica, and if a slide is non-negotiable, see the Jamaica resorts with water parks. Then add one or two of the trips below.

Before you plan a day out

• Keep drives short. Jamaica looks small on a map, but country roads are slow. With children, pick things near your base: Ocho Rios for Dunn’s River and Mystic Mountain, Montego Bay or Falmouth for the river and the lagoon, the South Coast for YS Falls.
• Go early. Mornings are cooler, and in Ocho Rios and Montego Bay the big attractions get busy when cruise ships are in.
• Pack water shoes, sunscreen and some Jamaican cash. Card machines aren’t always working at small stalls, and wet rocks are slippery.
• Check age and height rules before you pay. Tour operators set minimum ages for climbing, riding and snorkeling, and they do enforce them.

Dunn’s River Falls, Ocho Rios

The one every Jamaican child climbs at least once, usually on a school trip, holding hands in a human chain up the rocks. The falls run straight onto a beach, so smaller children who don’t want to climb can play at the bottom while the rest of the family goes up.

Best for: active families with children who are steady on their feet. Drawback: the rocks are wet and the water pushes against little legs, and it gets crowded on cruise-ship days. Climb with one of the park’s guides. Full details are in my Dunn’s River Falls guide.

Green Grotto Caves, Discovery Bay

A guided walk, not caving, through cool limestone chambers with an underground lake, bats and a lot of history: Taíno people, the Spanish and people escaping slavery all used these caves. Chukka, which runs the tour, sets the minimum age at 4. It makes a good break from the sun on the drive between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay.

Best for: curious kids from 4 up. Drawback: there are bats, which some children love and some don’t. See my Green Grotto Caves guide.

Mystic Mountain, Ocho Rios

An adventure park on the hill above Ocho Rios. A chairlift takes you up, and at the top there’s a bobsled ride, a coaster, a zipline, a climbing wall, a rope course and a pool with a view over the bay.

Best for: families with older children who want thrills more than water. Drawback: the rides are high up, and packages add up for a big family. My Mystic Mountain guide has the packages and hours.

Horseback ride and swim, St Ann

Riding a horse into the sea is the kind of thing children talk about for years. Chukka, which says it started the Horseback Ride ‘N’ Swim in 1983, runs it from its Seville location near St Ann’s Bay, on a historic site once home to the Taíno, the Spanish and enslaved Africans. Its booking page sets the minimum age at 6, a maximum weight of 230 lbs, and closed-toe shoes.

Best for: children 6 and up who are comfortable around animals. Drawback: transport isn’t included in the basic ride, so you need a taxi or a package with pickup.

Bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae, Trelawny

A slow ride on a bamboo raft down the Martha Brae River near Falmouth, with a raft captain doing all the work. It’s calm, shady and easy for small children, as long as they can sit still for about an hour.

Best for: families with young children, and grandparents. Drawback: rafts are priced per raft and built for two adults, so a bigger family needs more than one. See my Martha Brae rafting guide.

The Luminous Lagoon at night, Falmouth

At Rock, just outside Falmouth, the water glows blue when you move it, thanks to tiny plankton. A short boat tour after dark is a good evening outing, and kids who are allowed to put a hand in the water usually don’t want to get out. Glistening Waters sells child tickets for children 10 and under.

Best for: an evening trip from Montego Bay or Falmouth. Drawback: it’s a late night for little ones, so check tour times on the operator’s ticket page. My Luminous Lagoon guide has the details.

Doctor’s Cave Beach, Montego Bay

A managed town beach on the Hip Strip with calm water, changing rooms, showers and chair rentals. The club charges a lower rate for children under 12. For a family that just wants a safe, easy beach day near the airport, it’s the simplest choice in Montego Bay.

Best for: young children and a no-fuss beach day. Drawback: it’s a paid beach and gets busy on weekends. See my Doctor’s Cave Beach guide.

YS Falls, St Elizabeth

Seven tiers of waterfalls with natural pools, on a farm on the South Coast. A tractor ride takes you up from the ticket office, and there’s a spring-fed pool as well as the river pools, which makes it gentler than Dunn’s River.

Best for: families staying on the South Coast or doing a long day trip. Drawback: it’s about two hours from Montego Bay each way, and it isn’t open every day. Read my YS Falls guide before you go.

Hope Gardens and Hope Zoo, Kingston

Growing up, this was where Kingston families went for a Sunday picnic or a school trip. The botanical gardens are free to enter and open daily from 6 am to 6 pm. Hope Zoo, on the same grounds, is run separately and charges its own admission, so budget for it if the children want to see the animals.

Best for: families staying in Kingston. Drawback: it’s a long way from the north coast resorts, and parts of the gardens are worn. See my Hope Gardens and Hope Zoo guide.

Black River safari, St Elizabeth

A boat ride up the Black River to see crocodiles, birds and mangroves. In March 2026, Black River Safari Tours said it had most of its boats back after the 2025 hurricane and was running tours, with a second operator rebuilding its fleet. Call ahead to confirm your date.

Best for: kids who want to see a crocodile. Drawback: the town is still rebuilding, so facilities may be limited.

Closed or unconfirmed

• Kool Runnings Water Park, Negril: closed permanently. For slides, look at a resort with a water park instead.
• Mayfield Falls, Westmoreland: I couldn’t confirm it’s open, so it’s off the list for now.
