My local take

Jamaica Inn has been the quiet, grown-up hotel of Ocho Rios since the 1950s, when Churchill painted here and Marilyn Monroe honeymooned. It’s still run by the Morrow family: suites and cottages on a private crescent beach, no TVs in the rooms, croquet on the lawn and a five-course dinner on the terrace every night. Continental breakfast, afternoon tea and evening hors d’oeuvres come with every stay, and you can add half board or an all-inclusive plan.

My take: this is for couples who want rest, a proper beach and evenings that feel like an occasion. It isn’t for families with young children, since the hotel only takes children 10 and older, and it isn’t for anyone who wants swim-up bars and a disco.

If it’s not quite right, look at Sandals Royal Plantation, a small, all-butler adults-only all-inclusive just along the coast, or Couples Tower Isle, a couples-only beach resort just east of Ocho Rios. For a Montego Bay take on the same old-school style, see Round Hill. More options: the best honeymoon resorts in Jamaica.

What stands out

  • A private beach of about 700 feet, kept for hotel guests.
  • Continental breakfast, afternoon tea and evening hors d'oeuvres included in every stay.
  • Cottages with their own infinity plunge pools and direct sea access.
  • Kayaks, sunfish sailing, paddleboards and snorkeling at no extra charge.
  • Children must be 10 or older, which keeps it calm.
  • Free Wi-Fi, and Ian Fleming airport is only 15 minutes away for private flights.

What to know before booking

  • About 90 minutes by road from Montego Bay airport.
  • Lunch, dinner and drinks cost extra unless you add a meal plan.
  • A strict evening dress code: long trousers, collared shirts and no flip-flops for men.
  • No TVs in the rooms, which some will see as a downside.
  • No children under 10.

Rooms

Every room is a suite or cottage with a view of the sea. Balcony Suites sit on the upper floor with large balconies; Deluxe Verandah Suites open onto the croquet lawn and the beach; Premier Verandah Suites have furnished verandahs right by the sand. The Cowdray Suite adds a dressing room and a big balcony, and the Blue Cottage sits directly on the beach. For more privacy, the one- and two-bedroom cottages each have an infinity plunge pool and their own sea access, and Suite 21, the largest, has its own small peninsula with a plunge pool and sundeck. There are no TVs in the rooms.

Food & drink

Every stay includes continental breakfast, afternoon tea and hors d’oeuvres with cocktails on the terrace from 7 to 8 pm. You can upgrade to full breakfast, half board (full breakfast and dinner) or all-inclusive, which adds lunch, dinner and drinks by the glass, plus a dine-around at Miss T’s, Manzil or Evita’s in Ocho Rios. Wine and liquor by the bottle and spa treatments aren’t included, and the dine-around doesn’t cover transfers, lobster, drinks or tips.

Breakfast and light lunches are at the Sea Shanty by the water, and Teddy’s Beach Bar and Grill does wood-fired pizza on the sand. Dinner is a five-course menu at the Terrace from 7 to 9:30 pm, changing nightly, with live music and weekly lobster nights in season. My take: the Miss T’s dine-around is worth using. It’s one of the best places in town for proper Jamaican food.

Pool & beach

The beach is a crescent of golden sand, about 700 feet long, used only by hotel guests, with palapas for shade and a complimentary Planter’s Punch brought to your lounger at 11:30 each morning. There’s a swimming pool by Teddy’s bar, and kayaks, sunfish sailing, paddleboards and snorkeling are included. The hotel supports the White River Fish Sanctuary just offshore, including a coral-planting program. The Ocean Spa has an open-air saltwater sea bath cut into the rock, and there are morning yoga classes and a small gym.

Location

Jamaica Inn is in Ocho Rios, about 90 minutes by road from Sangster International in Montego Bay and from Norman Manley in Kingston. Ian Fleming International, 15 minutes away, takes private and charter flights. The hotel arranges private transfers, or you can rent a car. You’re close to Konoko Falls, about 10 minutes away, Dunn’s River Falls, Mystic Mountain and Nine Mile. Locals will tell you to do Dunn’s River early, before the cruise-ship crowds. Questions people ask
