My local take
Every Jamaican child grows up hearing about Annie Palmer, the White Witch of Rose Hall, who, the story goes, killed three husbands and haunts the house to this day. Rose Hall leans into that legend, and the night tour is pure theater. Underneath the ghost story is a real place: a big Georgian great house on the hills of what was the Rose Hall sugar estate, restored in the 1960s, with a museum, an old graveyard and gardens looking out to the sea. Treat the White Witch as folklore told well, and listen for the history of the estate and the enslaved people who worked it. For the duppies, rolling calf and other stories Jamaicans grow up with, see Jamaican myths and legends.
The day tour suits anyone who wants an hour of history between beach days. The Haunted Night Tour, with actors and a cocktail at the Dungeon Bar afterwards, is the one people talk about. My take: if you only do one, do the night tour. If you’re traveling with young children, the day tour is the safer choice. It is the easiest heritage stop from the Montego Bay hotels, and it pairs well with a beach afternoon, since you only need a couple of hours.
Other guides nearby: Rocklands Bird Sanctuary, where you feed hummingbirds by hand, and bamboo rafting on the Martha Brae River near Falmouth. For the wider area, see our Montego Bay guide.
How to get there
Rose Hall Great House sits on the hill above the coast road at Rose Hall, about 10 km east of Montego Bay. From the Hip Strip and downtown Montego Bay, allow roughly 20 to 30 minutes by taxi, depending on traffic. It is a few minutes up the hill from the Rose Hall resort strip, including Iberostar Selection Rose Hall Suites.
From Falmouth, it is roughly 30 minutes west along the coast road. From Negril, plan on around two hours or more each way.
Without a car: Take a licensed taxi from Montego Bay or the Rose Hall hotels (agree the fare and the return pickup first, as the night tour ends after dark), or book a tour that includes transport, as Rose Hall doesn't provide any.
What to expect
The Rose Hall Great House and Garden Tour is guided. Your guide takes you through the restored house, tells the story of the estate and of Annee Palmer (the spelling Rose Hall uses), and covers how the planter class lived in 18th-century Jamaica. The house also has a historical museum, an 18th-century graveyard on the grounds, and Annee’s Treasure, a shop for Jamaican arts and crafts; my guide to Jamaican souvenirs worth buying helps you choose. Tours run in English, with printed scripts in more than ten languages at admissions.
The Haunted Night Tour is an interactive tour set in the 19th century, with actors, and Rose Hall describes it as Jamaica’s only haunted night tour. Afterwards there’s a Witches Brew cocktail at the Dungeon Bar, which is not included in the ticket. Each tour lasts 45 minutes to an hour.
Rose Hall lists the day tour at US$30 for adults and the night tour at US$35 for adults; check children’s rates for both when you book. Check current prices on the official site before you go.
If you have time for a second house, Cinnamon Hill Great House is on the same Rose Hall estate, and Rose Hall runs its tours too. Rose Hall says it was built in 1734 by Edward Barrett, an ancestor of the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and that Johnny Cash bought it in the early 1970s and kept it as his and June Carter Cash’s Jamaican home; the interior still has family photos and a pair of his work boots. The 45-minute tour runs Monday to Friday, 10 am to 3 pm, closed weekends and public holidays, and Rose Hall’s tour page lists it at US$25 for adults and US$10 for ages 4 to 11. The same rules apply: no photos inside, no transport, and not recommended for anyone with physical limitations. For the other great houses you can visit around the island, see my guide to great houses in Jamaica.
Local tips
Book the night tour ahead. Rose Hall requires reservations for every Haunted Night Tour, and for groups over 15.
Leave the camera in your bag inside the house. Rose Hall does not allow photos or videos in the house, whatever older guides (including the old version of this page) say about photographing “ghosts”, so save your pictures for the grounds and the view.
Wear comfortable shoes. It’s the one thing Rose Hall asks you to bring, and there are stairs and uneven floors in an old house.
Around Halloween, Rose Hall runs special Halloween haunted night tours. Book early if you’re on the island at the end of October.
Jamaican residents should call or email admissions before booking to get the local rate, and bring valid Jamaican ID to check-in.
On a cruise? Local knowledge: Rose Hall is a regular shore-excursion stop from the Montego Bay and Falmouth ports, so the day tour is busier when ships are in. Book through your ship or agree a return time with a licensed taxi, and leave a good margin before all-aboard.
Before you go
- Rose Hall says the tour is not handicapped accessible, and not recommended for anyone with physical limitations or back problems.
- The house is closed on Sundays and on any public holiday, and the night tour runs only Wednesday to Saturday.
- The night tour is meant to scare. Rose Hall asks parents to use their discretion with children under 12.
- Tours are weather permitting.
