My local take

Deja is a small, Jamaican-owned all-inclusive right on the Hip Strip, the stretch of Jimmy Cliff Boulevard (still Gloucester Avenue to most of us) with the bars, shops and beach clubs. It doesn’t have its own beach; guests get free entry to Doctor’s Cave Beach across the road. My take: it suits people who want a simple all-inclusive base in town, a short ride from the airport, and like walking out to the Strip at night. If you want a private beach, lots of restaurants or a quiet resort, book one of the big resorts east of the airport instead.

Think of it as a town hotel with the meals and drinks included, not a resort to spend the whole week inside. That’s not a bad thing: Doctor’s Cave is one of the best swimming beaches in Montego Bay, and the Tuesday street party gives you Jamaican food and music without a taxi.

If it’s not quite right, look at Iberostar Waves Rose Hall Beach, a straightforward family all-inclusive on its own beach 15 minutes from the airport, or Riu Montego Bay, a big adults-only all-inclusive on Mahoe Bay. More options: the best all-inclusive resorts in Montego Bay.

What stands out

  • Free access to Doctor's Cave Beach, about a minute's walk away.
  • On the Hip Strip, so bars, shops and restaurants are on foot.
  • About 5 minutes from Sangster International Airport, so you lose little of your first and last days.
  • Jamaican-owned, with Jamaican food at the Waterfalls Restaurant and a street party on Tuesday nights.
  • A pool, hot tub, spa and 24-hour gym, plus activities for children ages 4 to 11.

What to know before booking

  • There's no private beach; Doctor's Cave is a public beach club across the road.
  • Two restaurants and a poolside grill, far fewer choices than the big resorts.
  • Airport transfers cost extra.
  • Some rooms are on upper floors reached by stairs only, so ask for a ground-floor room if steps are a problem.
  • The Hip Strip is busy and noisy at night, which is the point for some and a drawback for others.

Rooms

Deja’s own pages put the room count at just over 90. Superior double and superior king rooms are 28 m², with city views, a tea and coffee maker, a safe and a flat-screen TV. Junior suites are 37 m² with a balcony and two beds. King suites sit in a private suite block on the ground floor, with a terrace, a minibar, a coffee machine and concierge service, for up to two people. Rooms in the main block can be on upper floors reached only by stairs. Cribs and extra beds are free on request, subject to availability. The whole property is non-smoking, with outdoor smoking areas.

Food & drink

The Waterfalls Restaurant serves Jamaican and international food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Irie Italiano does Italian with a Jamaican touch, the Jammin Bar & Grill by the pool does sandwiches, burgers and finger food, and One Drop Café has Jamaican coffee, milkshakes, ice cream and fresh fruit. On Tuesday nights the Jamaican Street Party brings local food and live entertainment. My take: with only a few places to eat, use the location. Good jerk and seafood are a short walk or taxi ride away.

Pool & beach

There’s an outdoor pool and hot tub, with the Jammin Bar & Grill steps away. For the sea, guests get free entry to Doctor’s Cave Beach Club, about a minute’s walk across the road, known for its calm, clear water. Other options are a short walk away too: Harmony Beach Park is about 10 minutes on foot.

Location

Deja is on the Hip Strip, about 5 minutes from Sangster International Airport. Doctor’s Cave is across the road, and Margaritaville and the Strip’s bars are within walking distance. For more of the real town, head to downtown Montego Bay and Sam Sharpe Square by day. Use licensed taxis (red PPV plates) and agree the fare before you get in.
