My local take

Riu Montego Bay is the big, social one of the three Riu resorts on Mahoe Bay in Ironshore, just east of the airport. It’s adults only (18 and over), with 826 rooms, five pools, its own Splash Water World and the weekly RIU Party. Riu itself pitches it as the fun, party-forward option, while the Palace next door is the quieter, more polished one.

My take: this suits couples and groups of friends who want energy, plenty of people around and a short transfer. If you want quiet evenings and a small, personal resort, this isn’t it. The other thing I’d tell a friend: you’re 2.7 km from the runway, so planes coming in are part of the scenery.

If it’s not quite right, look at Riu Reggae, the smaller adults-only Riu on the same bay, or Excellence Oyster Bay near Falmouth for a quieter adults-only resort. More options: the best adults-only all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica.

What stands out

  • Ten to fifteen minutes from Sangster International Airport, one of the shortest transfers in Jamaica.
  • Adults only, yet it has its own water park, Splash Water World, free for guests.
  • Five pools, one with a swim-up bar, and about 500 m of Mahoe Bay beach with kayaking and snorkeling included.
  • Six places to eat, including the Pepe's Food jerk station and a poolside steakhouse.
  • Free Wi-Fi throughout, and a minibar and drinks dispenser in every room.
  • Free parking if you rent a car, which makes day trips easy.

What to know before booking

  • It's big, with 826 rooms, and built around entertainment and the RIU Party: lively rather than quiet.
  • Being 2.7 km from the airport means planes overhead during the day.
  • Spa treatments cost extra.
  • Many doubles come with two small double beds (125 cm wide), so couples should book a king.

Rooms

Every room has a minibar and drinks dispenser, satellite TV, air conditioning and a balcony or terrace. Doubles are 29 m², with a king bed or two small doubles (125 cm wide), and come with garden, side sea or full sea views. Family rooms (36 m²) work for three or four friends sharing. The sea-view suites (58 m²) add a lounge area and a bathtub. Accessible rooms (32 m²) and connecting doubles are also available.

Food & drink

Riu lists six places to eat: the Rose Hall buffet with live cooking, Kulinarium for a more formal dinner, Sofia (Italian), Golden Dragon (Asian), a poolside restaurant that turns into a steakhouse at night, and Pepe’s Food jerk station. There are four bars, and food and drinks run 24 hours. Smart casual is asked for at dinner in the themed restaurants. My take: make the jerk station a regular stop, and if you want the real thing, Scotchies is a short taxi ride away.

Pool & beach

The resort sits on about 500 m of Mahoe Bay beach, with kayaking and snorkeling included. There are five pools, one with a swim-up bar, and Splash Water World, which is free for guests. It’s unusual to find a water park at an adults-only resort, and it’s one of the main reasons people pick this one over its neighbors.

Location

Mahoe Bay is in Ironshore, just east of Montego Bay, and Riu puts the drive from Sangster International at 10 to 15 minutes (2.7 km). The Hip Strip and Doctor’s Cave Beach are a short taxi ride west, and Rose Hall Great House is a few minutes east. For a lazy afternoon away from the resort, Margaritaville on the Hip Strip is easy to reach. See where to stay in Montego Bay for the wider area.
