My local take
Harmony Beach Park is the Urban Development Corporation’s big public park at the downtown end of the Hip Strip. Locals still know this stretch as Dump-Up Beach. The UDC turned it into a 16-acre park that opened in 2021, with the Tourism Enhancement Fund as the main funder, and entry is free. It has jogging trails, lawns, play and sports areas and a short stretch of beach. On weekends and public holidays it is where Montego Bay families come to exercise, picnic and cool off, and the UDC’s chairman said in May that tourists have lately been filling the beach too.
Go on a weekday morning from Wednesday, when the beach section opens at 9 am and it is still cool. Come evening, the park side stays open late, and it is one of the few places in town for an evening walk by the water. Compared with Doctor’s Cave Beach a little way up the Hip Strip, Harmony is free and more local, with more open space, but it has a smaller beach and fewer services, and you won’t find beach chairs and umbrellas laid out for you. My take: if you want a proper day lying on the sand with a bar nearby, pay for Doctor’s Cave. If you want a free swim, room for children to run, or a walk where Montego Bay people actually go, Harmony is the better pick.
Harmony is a few minutes’ walk from downtown Montego Bay and Sam Sharpe Square, so it pairs well with a history walk. For a beach with full services, see Doctor’s Cave Beach Club, or browse my Montego Bay guide.
How to get there
The park sits where Jimmy Cliff Boulevard (still widely called Gloucester Avenue) meets Howard Cooke Boulevard, at the downtown end of the Hip Strip. From Doctor’s Cave Beach it is under 2 km by road, a few minutes by taxi or a longer walk along the strip. Sam Sharpe Square is about 500 m away on foot (map distances).
The UDC puts the park about seven minutes’ drive from Sangster International Airport; by map it is around 8 km by road. From the Montego Bay cruise port at Freeport, allow about 10 minutes by taxi. From the Rose Hall hotels, such as Iberostar Waves Rose Hall Beach, plan on 25 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic through town. There is a car park at the park, charged by the hour or by the day.
What to expect
The UDC describes Harmony as an active public park with spaces for exercise, play, relaxation and sport. The jogging trail has a rubberized surface made from recycled material, the admin building runs on solar power, and the grounds are planted with Jamaican endemic plants. The UDC has listed free public Wi-Fi among the amenities, and the Jamaica Observer reported in May that the park has changing rooms and food shops.
The park and the beach keep different hours. The grounds are open every day from 6 am to 10 pm, but the beach section is open only Wednesday to Sunday, from 9 am to 5 pm. Entry is free. The UDC lists car parking at $200 an hour or $700 a day, and bus parking at $400 an hour or $2,500 a day; check the UDC page for current rates.
The park reopened on November 11, 2025, after Hurricane Melissa, according to the UDC. In April 2025 the UDC closed the beach for about three weeks because of a water-quality problem, then reopened it once the issue was dealt with. From November 18 to 22, the park hosts the Special Olympics Caribbean Beach Games, so expect parts of it to be in use and busier than usual that week.
Local tips
- Plan your swim for Wednesday to Sunday. On Monday and Tuesday the park is open but the beach section is not.
- Go in the morning on weekends and public holidays. That is when local families arrive and the car park and beach fill up.
- Bring your own towel, water and sun protection. It is a public park, not a beach club, so don't count on chair rentals.
- Pair it with a morning walk around Sam Sharpe Square and the Cultural Centre, a short walk away, then cool off here after lunch.
- If the beach is closed on the day, ask staff; the UDC posts closures and updates on its site and through JIS.
Before you go
- The beach section is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, even though the park itself is open.
- The beach is small for a 16-acre park, so on busy days it gets crowded.
- The UDC closed the beach for water quality in April 2025, and again after Hurricane Melissa, so check for notices if you’re planning around a swim.
- Services are basic compared with a paid beach: no beach chairs laid out, and food comes from the on-site shops.
- From November 18 to 22, the Special Olympics Caribbean Beach Games are on here, which will limit some areas.

What are Harmony Beach Park's opening hours?
According to the UDC, the park is open daily from 6 am to 10 pm, and the beach section is open Wednesday to Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. The beach is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Is Harmony Beach Park open after Hurricane Melissa?
Yes. The UDC reopened it on November 11, 2025, and its attractions page lists the park’s current hours. The Observer reported in May that tourists are now a big part of the beach crowd.
Is Harmony Beach Park the same as Aquasol or Walter Fletcher Beach?
