My local take

Sandals Caribbean Cay is closed until Dec 18, 2026. Until Hurricane Melissa shut it in October 2025, this was Sandals Royal Caribbean, and it comes back under a new name: Sandals says the new identity is inspired by its offshore island, which it now calls Sandals Cay. The old sandals.com address already sends you to the new page. Sandals is taking bookings for stays from the reopening date, and the Jamaica Tourist Board lists the same date under the old name. What’s coming, per Sandals’ June 2026 announcement: a new open-air lobby, a bigger redesigned main pool, 84 new rooms for 291 in total, the new Suppa restaurant and Keynote Rum Bar, and Parisol Beach Club on the island. Sandals notes that renderings and product details are subject to change.

My take: the island is the reason to book here. A five-minute boat ride gets you to a beach, a pool and a swim-up bar away from the main resort, and the overwater villas and bungalows just off the island are the splurge Montego Bay is known for. Locals know Mahoe Bay as a calmer stretch east of the airport, away from the Hip Strip. Every guest must be 18 or older, and the resort is designed for couples. Give a freshly rebuilt resort a little slack in its first weeks.

For a trip before December, look at Hotel Riu Montego Bay, an open adults-only resort on the same bay, or Sandals Royal Plantation in Ocho Rios for a smaller, quieter Sandals. After the reopening, compare it with its sister Sandals Montego Bay. More options: honeymoon resorts in Jamaica and the best adults-only all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica.

Rooms

Sandals lists 291 rooms after the rebuild, in Sandals Luxury, Club Sandals (with concierge service) and Butler Elite categories, all with king beds. New for arrivals from Dec 18, 2026 are SkyPool Butler Suites on the upper floors of the beachfront buildings, each with a private pool on the balcony (Sandals’ announcement says 12), Beachfront and Beachside Butler Suites with private pools, and swim-up Club suites on the Crystal Lagoon pool. New Oceanview Butler Suites are listed for arrivals from June 1, 2027. The showpieces are the Overwater Butler Villas, with an infinity pool and glass floors, and the Overwater Butler Honeymoon Bungalows, both just off the private island, with butler service, 24-hour in-room dining and a private water taxi to the mainland. Check the view in the room name when you book: it ranges from garden and pool to beachfront.

Food & drink

Sandals’ restaurant list for the resort has ten venues and the resort has five bars. New for the reopening are Suppa, a supper-style restaurant serving Jamaican comfort food for sharing, and the Keynote Rum Bar, with Caribbean small plates and more than 30 rums. The rest: Bombay for Indian food, Strand for seafood by the shore, Tesoro for Southern Italian pasta and stone-oven pizza, the Cricketer’s Pub, Heart & Sol for bowls and sandwiches, and Blum for Blue Mountain coffee. On the island, Parisol does breakfast and long lunches and the Jerk Shack does jerk off the grill. Under Stay at 1, Play at 2, you can also eat at Sandals Montego Bay, with round-trip transportation included. A culinary concierge desk handles reservations and dietary needs; special preparations such as kosher meals need a month’s notice. Sandals’ evening dress code applies at some venues: for men, long pants or jeans and dress shoes or sandals, with no flip-flops or sneakers.

Pool & beach

Sandals lists eight pools and six whirlpools, led by a bigger, redesigned main pool you see from the new open-air lobby. The private island, Sandals Cay, is five minutes away by Sandals boat, with its own beach, pool, whirlpool, swim-up bar and palapas on the sand, and the new Parisol Beach Club. Hobie Cats, sailboats, paddleboards, kayaks, tubing and snorkeling are included, as is scuba for certified divers. Water skiing is at Sandals Montego Bay, with transfers included.

Location

The resort is on Mahoe Bay, east of Sangster International Airport along the coast road toward Rose Hall, about 20 minutes by transfer according to Sandals, and transfers are included. It’s a quieter spot than the Hip Strip, but taxis get you to Doctor’s Cave Beach Club or downtown Montego Bay easily. Locals will point you to Scotchies for jerk, Rose Hall Great House for an evening tour, and Martha Brae rafting for a half day out. See where to stay in Montego Bay for the wider area.
