My local take
The Pegasus is the Kingston hotel most Jamaicans know by name. It opened in 1973, it calls itself “the protocol hotel of Kingston”, and it’s where the government meetings, big conferences, weddings and awards dinners happen. You get 300 rooms in a 17-story tower on Knutsford Boulevard, breakfast every morning, an Olympic-size pool and a café that never closes.
My take: book it when your trip is about Kingston itself. That means business in New Kingston, a conference in the building, or a first visit built around the Bob Marley Museum and Devon House. It isn’t a resort and doesn’t pretend to be. There’s no beach, and lunch and dinner are paid as you go. If you want quiet, a hotel that hosts events for up to 1,000 people isn’t it.
If it’s not quite right, look at Courtyard by Marriott Kingston, a smaller branded hotel a few minutes away by Emancipation Park, or the Courtleigh Hotel & Suites, the Pegasus’s sister hotel in New Kingston. For a modern design hotel, try AC Hotel Kingston. More options: where to stay in Kingston.

- An Olympic-size pool with a renovated pool bar, unusual for a city hotel.

What to know before booking
- It's a city hotel: no beach, and not all-inclusive. Lunch, dinner and drinks are extra.
- The pool closes at 6 pm.
- It's Kingston's busiest event hotel, so expect conferences, weddings and Friday night "Let's Lyme" crowds by the pool.
- The airport shuttle costs extra, and late check-out may carry a fee.

Rooms
The Pegasus lists 300 rooms and suites, all non-smoking, for up to four people each. Deluxe King rooms come two ways: a 230 sq ft room with a balcony, or a larger 300 sq ft interior room. Deluxe Doubles have two double beds. Both look over the pool or toward the Blue Mountains. The Deluxe One Bedroom King Suite is about 600 sq ft with a separate living area. On the Royal Club floors you get access to the Royal Club Lounge for continental breakfast and evening cocktails. The Royal Two Bedroom Suites, at up to 1,500 sq ft with two king bedrooms, a kitchenette and a big balcony over the city, are the ones for families or small groups. Children under 12 stay free, up to two per room.
Food & drink
Breakfast is included and served at the Blue Window Restaurant, which overlooks the pool. Blue Window also runs a weekday lunch, themed dinners and a Sunday brunch, with special menus for days like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. The 24 Seven Café is open around the clock for coffee, sandwiches, scones and cheesecake. In the evening, Blend Bar & Lounge has live piano on Wednesdays and jazz on Thursdays. Tuesday on the Grill puts a buffet and a live reggae band by the pool, and Friday’s “Let’s Lyme” runs 6 pm to 11 pm. My take: if you’re in town on a Sunday, the brunch is the local tradition here.
Pool & beach
There’s no beach in New Kingston. What the Pegasus has instead is an Olympic-size outdoor pool, open 7 am to 6 pm, with a renovated pool bar and lounge. There’s also a free gym, the White Orchid Salon & Spa, and a lit quarter-mile jogging trail on the grounds. Kingston’s usual beach trips, the boat to Lime Cay from Port Royal and the fish spots at Hellshire, haven’t had an official update since the hurricane, so ask at the front desk before you go.
Location
The hotel is at 81 Knutsford Boulevard, the main strip of New Kingston’s business district. Emancipation Park is a short walk away. Devon House and the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road are a few minutes by taxi, and Hope Gardens is a little further up the road. For music history, add the Trench Town Culture Yard, and for a morning in the hills, a Blue Mountain coffee tour. The hotel puts Norman Manley International Airport about 25 minutes away and can arrange a shuttle for a fee. The UK FCDO’s advice for the airport run is to use the South Camp Road route, and not to drive in Kingston if you don’t know the city, so a pre-booked transfer makes sense. See where to stay in Kingston and Kingston for visitors for the wider city.
