My local take

Altamont Court is a small, locally owned hotel on a side street in New Kingston, open since 1982 and run by the same group as Altamont West in Montego Bay. It has fewer than 60 rooms, a pool, the Mango Tree restaurant, and Emancipation Park a four-minute walk away. My take: it’s a sensible, central base for a short business trip or a small group on a budget, not a place to spend your holiday in.

Know the limits before you book. The restaurant’s posted hours end at 6 pm, the gym is out of service, and the front desk isn’t staffed overnight. The Junior Suite, with three double beds and a bathroom and a half, is a useful option for a group of four.

If you want more hotel for your money, the Courtleigh Hotel & Suites and S Hotel Kingston are close by, with 24-hour gyms and breakfast included. Also look at AC Hotel Kingston, or see where to stay in Kingston.

What stands out

  • Central: a four-minute walk to Emancipation Park, and about 2 km to the Bob Marley Museum.
  • Small, at fewer than 60 rooms, and locally owned since 1982.
  • Junior Suites with three double beds and 1.5 bathrooms sleep four, handy for small groups.
  • Outdoor pool, free Wi-Fi and free parking.
  • Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before arrival under the hotel's standard policy.

What to know before booking

  • The Mango Tree Restaurant's posted hours end at 6 pm (5 pm on Sundays), so plan to eat dinner out.
  • The gym is out of service.
  • The front desk is staffed 8 am to 11 pm (6 pm on Sundays), not around the clock.
  • Check-out is 11 am, earlier than most Kingston hotels.
  • Breakfast is included only on breakfast-plan rates, so check what you're booking.

Rooms

Altamont Court has fewer than 60 rooms across eight categories. The Economy Room is compact, with a double bed and a work space. Deluxe King and Deluxe Double rooms (two double beds) have a mini-balcony or balcony, and the Executive rooms add a bathtub and better toiletries. The Junior Suite has three double beds, a living room, a bathroom and a half and a balcony, and sleeps four. The Superior Suite and Alexander Suite have a separate bedroom and living room. Every room has air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi, a safe, a mini-fridge and coffee and tea, with a microwave on request. All rooms are non-smoking, and two accessible rooms can be booked in advance.

Food & drink

The Mango Tree Restaurant serves Jamaican, American and continental dishes, with vegan and vegetarian options, from 7 am to 6 pm (5 pm on Sundays). Breakfast comes three ways: full American, full Jamaican or continental, and it’s included on breakfast-plan rates. The Mango Tree Bar is a small lounge bar. My take: New Kingston has plenty of restaurants a short ride away, and Devon House is the easy first dinner.

Pool & beach

There’s no beach in New Kingston. Altamont Court has an outdoor pool surrounded by palm trees. Kingston’s usual beach trips, the boat to Lime Cay from Port Royal and the fish spots at Hellshire, haven’t had an official update since the hurricane, so ask at the front desk before you go.

Location

The hotel is at 1-5 Altamont Terrace, a side street off the New Kingston strip. By the hotel’s figures, Emancipation Park is a four-minute walk, Devon House about 1.4 km, the Bob Marley Museum about 2 km, Trench Town Culture Yard about 3 km, the National Gallery of Jamaica and Hope Gardens within a nine-minute drive, and Port Royal about 9 km. Norman Manley International Airport is about 20 to 25 minutes away, and the concierge can arrange a transfer; book ahead for late arrivals, since the front desk closes overnight. The UK Foreign Office advises visitors who don’t know Kingston not to drive in the city, and notes that most people use the South Camp Road (Humming Bird) route to and from the airport, so a hotel transfer or a registered taxi is the simple answer. See where to stay in Kingston for the wider city.
