My local take

Kingston has few adventure parks; for ATVs and ziplines, people usually drive over the mountain to Ocho Rios or Montego Bay. River Ryder fills that gap. It sits on the lawn and grounds of the old Temple Hall great house and aqueduct in the St Andrew hills, with trails for ATVs and mud buggies, a zipline, a paintball area, a Bali swing and access to the river, which the park calls the Wag River. It is a fairly new, locally run park rather than a big cruise-ship operation, and its social pages are aimed as much at Jamaican families and birthday groups as at visitors. The Jamaica Tourist Board’s list of open tours and attractions after Hurricane Melissa includes it under Kingston.

It suits people staying in Kingston who want a half day outdoors, groups of friends, and families with older children. If you are based on the north coast, the bigger parks there are closer and more polished. My take: for a Kingston trip it is the easy way to add some mud and adrenaline, but book directly with the park on WhatsApp, confirm what is running that day, and sort out your own transport, because it is up in the hills.

For something completely different the same week, see my guide to Spanish Town, the old capital. On the north coast, Yaaman Adventure Park and Mystic Mountain are the bigger adventure parks. For everything else in the capital, see my Kingston guide.

How to get there

From New Kingston: head north up Constant Spring Road to Stony Hill, then carry on into the hills to Temple Hall. It is roughly 20 km by road (approximate), usually 40 minutes to an hour depending on traffic. The last stretch is a narrow, winding hill road, so take it slowly and don’t drive it for the first time after dark.

From the north coast: Temple Hall is on the Kingston side of the hills, so it is a long day from Ocho Rios and not realistic from Montego Bay or Negril. If you are staying up there, the north coast parks make more sense.

Transfers: the park’s site doesn’t list hotel pickups, so plan your own transport and ask about it when you book.

What to expect

The activities. The park lists an ATV adventure tour through the Temple Hall trails, a mud buggy tour, a zipline tour, a paintball shooting cage and a Bali swing, plus combinations of these. Most tours include a nature walk and free access to the river and the swing at what the park calls the Wishing River. There is also a Road ATV Tour along a hill trail with a zipline ride, and a Night ATV Tour with ATVs, the zipline after dark and food and drinks included; both need at least four people.

The full package. The Full Package and Park Access deal covers an ATV or buggy ride, the zipline, paintball, the Bali swing, the nature walk and river access, and was listed at US$116 for non-residents when I checked. A park-access-only option for the grounds and river was also listed. Prices on the site change with frequent discounts, so check the current rate when you book.

Local rates. The park has a separate set of local deals, which need a valid Jamaican ID at the gate; without one, extra charges apply. Group rates for eight or more and birthday packages are also listed.

Rules. Everyone signs a liability waiver before taking part. Children under 18 must be with a parent or guardian, and some activities have their own age, height or weight limits. Full payment is due before you take part, cancellations within 48 hours aren’t refunded, and activities can be delayed or canceled in bad weather, with free rescheduling in that case.

Local tips

  • Book on the park's WhatsApp line, +1 876 517 3277, and confirm the day before which activities are running and what time to arrive.
  • Wear closed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting muddy, and bring a change of clothes and a towel if you plan to go in the river.
  • Residents should bring a valid Jamaican ID; the local rates only apply if you show it.
  • If you take a taxi, agree a round-trip fare with waiting time, because you won't find a taxi waiting at Temple Hall.
  • Go early in the day. The hills are cooler in the morning, and afternoon showers are common in the rainy season.

Before you go

  • Opening hours aren’t on the park’s website. Its social pages list it as open daily from 9 am, with closing given as 6 pm on one page and 7 pm on another, so confirm before you go.
  • It is in the hills on a narrow road, with no hotel pickups listed. Without a car or a driver, it is hard to reach.
  • ATVs, buggies and ziplines carry real risk. You sign a waiver, and the park can turn away anyone it thinks is unfit or not following safety rules.
  • Rides depend on the weather; heavy rain can delay or cancel them, and hill rivers rise fast after a downpour, so stay out of the water if it is high or brown.
  • Cancellations within 48 hours of the activity, and no-shows, aren’t refunded.
