My local take

This is the adults-only half of the Blue Waters pair on the Trelawny coast, east of Montego Bay on the way to Falmouth. Unlike Hideaway in Negril, it’s the bigger of the two: 352 rooms and suites, against 225 at the family-friendly Royalton Blue Waters next door. Hideaway has four restaurants of its own (Calypso, Dorado, Armadillo and a Jerk Hut), its own pools, swim-up bar, beach area and a private islet, all kept for guests 18 and over.

My take: it suits couples who want adults-only space and a short transfer, and who don’t mind families on the other side of the property. You can use Royalton Blue Waters’ restaurants, bars and lazy river, but its guests can’t come into the Hideaway-only areas. Royalton says some restaurants at Royalton Blue Waters are being renovated, so check what’s open when you arrive.

If you want a fully adults-only resort with nothing for children on the property, look at Excellence Oyster Bay near Falmouth, or Royalton Hideaway Negril if you want the same set-up on Seven Mile Beach. What stands out

  • Four restaurants, two pools, a swim-up bar and a beach area kept for adults, plus a private islet.
  • Full use of Royalton Blue Waters next door, for 12 restaurants and 11 bars across both resorts.
  • About 35 minutes from Montego Bay airport.
  • Junior suites with a terrace Jacuzzi or swim-out pool, and presidential suites with a Jacuzzi.
  • Tips, free Wi-Fi, 24-hour room service and non-motorized water sports are included.

What to know before booking

  • It shares the property with a family resort, so you'll see children at the shared restaurants and bars.
  • Royalton says some restaurants at Royalton Blue Waters are under renovation and may be served at other venues.
  • The entry-level luxury rooms take two guests and aren't suites.
  • Diamond Club guests have their own lounge and beach bar; the C/X chef's table, spa treatments and cabanas cost extra.

Rooms

Every room has a DreamBed, rain shower, balcony or terrace, satellite TV, safe, minibar restocked daily and 24-hour room service. The entry level is the luxury room, in garden or ocean view, for two. Junior suites come with ocean views, as corner suites, with a terrace Jacuzzi or with a swim-out pool. At the top are presidential one- and two-bedroom Jacuzzi suites. The Diamond Club categories add a butler, preferred locations, the Hideaway Diamond Club lounge and beach bar.

Food & drink

Four restaurants are for Hideaway guests only: Calypso for Jamaican and West Indian food, Dorado seafood grill with sunset views, Armadillo Tex-Mex and a Jerk Hut on the beach. Grazie Italian also runs a Hideaway-only breakfast and lunch. Next door at Royalton Blue Waters you can use Gourmet Marché buffet, Hunter Steakhouse, Taj Indian, SCORE sports bar, Scoops and the C/X chef’s table (extra cost); Zen teppanyaki is on both lists. My take: Calypso and the Jerk Hut are your Jamaican food on site; for the real thing, ask a driver to stop at a roadside jerk spot on the way to Falmouth.

Pool & beach

Hideaway has two pools, including an infinity pool, the Pisces swim-up bar, an adults-only beach area with waiter service, cold towels and afternoon hors d’oeuvres, and a private islet. Private cabanas cost extra. Snorkeling, kayaks, paddleboards and an introductory scuba lesson are included, and you can use the lazy river and pools at Royalton Blue Waters.

Location

The resort is on the A1 coast road in Trelawny, between Montego Bay and Falmouth, and Royalton puts the drive from Sangster International Airport at about 35 minutes. The Luminous Lagoon is close by, and so is Martha Brae river rafting, a good pick for couples. The Rose Hall Great House is on the way back toward Montego Bay.
