My local take

Tower Isle is the Couples flagship, on the St Mary coast just east of Ocho Rios, and it feels like a classic Jamaican resort: a beach, a pier, a Piano Bar lined with old black-and-white photos of famous guests, and its own small island about 100 yards offshore. My take: it suits couples who want a beach resort on the Ocho Rios side, with golf, scuba and water sports in the price and the day trips close by. If you’re traveling with children or friends, it’s couples only, so look elsewhere.

Worth knowing: the island is the resort’s au naturel area, reached by boat, and topless sunbathing is allowed at the end of the pier. The Oasis Spa Villas are a step up, with a plunge pool and unlimited spa treatments, but need a five-night stay. Ian Fleming airport at Boscobel is about 15 minutes away, which makes the transfer much shorter than from Montego Bay.

If it’s not quite right, look at its sister resort Couples Sans Souci, smaller and stepped down a cliff with a mineral spring pool, or Sandals Dunn’s River, a newer, compact couples resort on Mammee Bay with 12 restaurants. More options: the best honeymoon resorts in Jamaica.

Rooms

Couples lists 226 rooms and suites, all with a king bed, a furnished balcony or patio, a personalized minibar and a coffee maker. Deluxe Garden rooms face the gardens or mountains, Deluxe and Superior Ocean rooms have sea views, and Premier Ocean rooms look straight out to the island. The Garden and Ocean Junior Suites add a sitting area and a Jacuzzi tub, and the One-Bedroom Ocean Suites have a separate living room. The Oasis Spa Villas (493 sq ft, or 639 sq ft for the Signature villa) have a plunge pool, private transfers and unlimited spa services, with a five-night minimum.

Food & drink

Couples lists seven restaurants and six bars. Eight Rivers is the fine-dining room, with Jamaican and continental dishes, reservations and an elegant-casual dress code (no shorts, T-shirts or flip-flops). Bayside serves Asian food by candlelight over the water, the Verandah does continental dishes, and the Patio does breakfast and Italian and Mediterranean dinners. The Pool Grill serves jerk chicken and patties all day and late at night. Martinis on the Roof runs two evenings a week. My take: have one lunch of jerk and patties at the Pool Grill; it’s the most Jamaican meal on property.

Pool & beach

There are four pools across the grounds, two overlooking the beach, with a swim-up bar and a waterfall, plus Jacuzzis on sun terraces. The au naturel island sits about 100 yards offshore, reached by boat, with its own pool, swim-up bar and lunch buffet, open from 9 am to 5 pm, weather permitting. Water sports include scuba, glass-bottom boat snorkel trips, Hobie Cat sailing, kayaks, water skiing, windsurfing, hydro bikes and paddleboards.

Tower Isle is on the St Mary coast, east of Ocho Rios town. Couples puts Ian Fleming International Airport (OCJ) about 15 minutes away and Montego Bay about an hour and 45 minutes, and includes transfers from both; Kingston transfers are included on stays of five nights or more. Golf is at Upton Golf & Country Club in the hills, with free transport. The Ocho Rios day trips are close: Dunn’s River Falls, Mystic Mountain and Blue Hole.
