Clothing-Optional Resorts and Beaches in Jamaica

Jamaica has no official nude beaches. What it does have is a handful of adults-only resorts with designated clothing-optional or au naturel areas, plus one small resort where clothes aren’t worn at all. This guide covers only places whose own websites confirm a nude or clothing-optional area, says exactly what each one offers, and sets out the house rules you’ll be expected to follow. All five are open, according to the Jamaica Tourist Board’s reopening list.

Outside these resorts, the answer is simple: public beaches in Jamaica are not clothing-optional. More on that below.

Hedonism II, Negril

Hedonism II is the best-known name on this list and the most open about what it is: an adults-only (18+), clothing-optional, lifestyle-friendly all-inclusive on Seven Mile Beach, for couples and singles. The resort describes its 280 rooms as either clothing-optional or nude, so you choose your side when you book.

• Clothing-optional side: a beach and pools where topless or nude is your choice.
• Nude side: a nude beach, a nude pool with a swim-up bar and a nude hot tub. Here nude isn’t optional: the resort says you’re expected to undress as soon as you enter.
• Where you dress: clothing covering chest, genitals and backside is required in all restaurants, and cover-ups are expected in the gym, lobby, shops and some bars.

Suits: sociable adults who want theme nights, parties and a very liberal crowd. Drawback: “lifestyle-friendly” means exactly what it sounds like, with an on-site Playroom. If you want nudity without the party, it’s the wrong resort.

Grand Lido Negril

Grand Lido Negril is the only resort in Jamaica where the whole property is clothing-free. It’s a 26-suite naturist enclave beside Royalton Negril on the Negril beach, run by Royalton as an Autograph Collection resort, for singles and couples aged 21 and over.

• Clothing-free throughout the Grand Lido enclave, including its pool, its dry beach area with waiter service and its Reggae Bar & Grill.
• Guests can also use the restaurants and bars at Royalton Negril and Hideaway next door, but must be fully clothed there.

Suits: adults who want a quiet, rule-bound naturist stay with butler service rather than a party. Drawback: it’s small, and most of the dining is on the clothed side next door.

Couples Negril

Couples Negril is a couples-only (18+) all-inclusive on Bloody Bay, at the quieter north end of Negril. Couples Resorts says it has a small, semi-private beach area set aside for au naturel sunbathing, just off the main beach. Topless sunbathing is allowed on the main beach.

Suits: couples who want a conventional romantic resort with the option of a nude area. Drawback: the au naturel area is small; this is a regular couples resort first.

Couples Sans Souci, Ocho Rios

At Couples Sans Souci, the au naturel area is Sunset Beach, a small bay with its own pool, Jacuzzi, bar and grill. Couples Resorts lists it as open for nude sunbathing from 9 am to 5 pm from September to March, and 9 am to 5:30 pm from April to August. From 6 pm it opens to all guests. Topless sunbathing is allowed on the main beach.

Suits: couples who want the Ocho Rios side of the island and a nude area with its own bar and pool. Drawback: Sunset Beach closes at 3 pm on days with a wedding or private event there.

Couples Tower Isle, east of Ocho Rios

Couples Tower Isle has the most unusual setup: its au naturel area is a small private island just offshore, reached by the resort’s boat, with a pool and swim-up bar. Couples Resorts lists it as open for nude sunbathing from 9 am to 5 pm daily, weather permitting. The rest of the resort isn’t clothing-optional; topless sunbathing is allowed at the end of the pier off the main beach.

Suits: couples who like the idea of a nude area that’s completely separate from the main resort. Drawback: it’s daytime only, depends on the weather, and closes at 4 pm on days when an island wedding is booked.

Topless only: Couples Swept Away

If topless is all you’re after, Couples Swept Away on Seven Mile Beach allows topless sunbathing on its main beach. Couples Resorts says plainly that au naturel sunbathing is not permitted there, so it’s not a nude option, whatever older lists say. Topless isn’t allowed in the pools at any Couples resort.

Left off this list

Older lists, including the earlier version of this page, named Grand Palladium Lady Hamilton in Hanover as having a nude beach. The resort’s official site describes a resort that welcomes children and mentions no nude, clothing-optional or topless area, so it isn’t included here. If a resort’s own site doesn’t confirm a clothing-optional area, assume it doesn’t have one and ask before you book.

Public beaches: not clothing-optional

I couldn’t find a government or official travel-advice page that addresses nudity on Jamaican beaches, so this is local knowledge, and any Jamaican will tell you the same: public beaches here are not clothing-optional, and nudity or going topless outside a resort’s designated area isn’t accepted. Seven Mile Beach in Negril has a relaxed reputation because of the resorts on it, but the public stretches are shared with families, vendors, fishermen and church groups on a Sunday. Jamaica is quite conservative about dress in public. Keep your swimsuit on, and put on a cover-up or shirt when you leave the sand for a shop, bar or the road.

The same goes for the beach in front of a clothing-optional resort. The designated area ends where the resort says it ends, and the public beach beyond it is not part of it.

Etiquette and house rules

Each resort sets its own rules, and they’re strictly enforced. These come from the resorts’ own guest guidelines:

• No photos of other guests. Grand Lido bans photography, video and webcam use, phones included. At Hedonism II, phones and all other electronics are banned in nude areas, phones in clothing-optional areas are for personal use only and never for recording other guests, and smart glasses and recording wearables aren’t allowed anywhere on the property. Couples’ FAQ doesn’t set out a separate camera rule for its au naturel areas; leave your phone away anyway.
• Bring a towel and sit on it. Grand Lido asks every guest to carry a towel at all times and always sit on it, which is standard naturist etiquette and a good habit anywhere.
• Look, don’t stare. Grand Lido says staff deal immediately with complaints of gawking or disrespectful behavior.
• Consent comes first. Grand Lido doesn’t tolerate sexual advances toward other guests and bans intimate touching in public areas. Hedonism II has a zero-tolerance policy for touching without permission and limits public displays of affection to its Playroom, nude pool and hot tub.
• Couples go together. Couples Resorts says its au naturel areas are for couples only, not for one partner while the other stays behind.

Which one to pick

My take: for a fully clothing-free stay without a party atmosphere, Grand Lido is the clear choice, as long as you’re 21 or older. For a social, anything-goes week, it’s Hedonism II. For a romantic couples resort where nudity is an option rather than the point, pick Couples Negril for calm Bloody Bay, Sans Souci for a nude area with its own bar and pool, or Tower Isle for the private island.
