My local take

The Oceana Hotel opened on the downtown waterfront in 1977. ROK is that same 12-story building, rebuilt and opened in August 2022 as Hilton’s Tapestry Collection debut in the Caribbean. It has 168 rooms, 47 of them suites, a first-floor pool deck, and the National Gallery of Jamaica a few steps away.

My take: book ROK if your Kingston is downtown. That means a conference at the Jamaica Conference Centre across the street, business in the downtown financial district, or a culture trip built around the National Gallery, the waterfront and a run out to Port Royal. If your plans are Devon House, the Bob Marley Museum and Hope Road, New Kingston puts you closer. It isn’t a resort and there’s no beach.

If it’s not quite right, look at The Jamaica Pegasus or AC Hotel Kingston, both in the New Kingston business district, or Strawberry Hill for a boutique stay up in the Blue Mountains. More options: where to stay in Kingston.

What to know before booking

  • It's a city hotel: no beach and not all-inclusive.
  • Downtown is a taxi ride from New Kingston, Devon House and the Bob Marley Museum.
  • Hilton's official pages couldn't be checked for this guide, so confirm restaurant names, hours and what your rate includes when you book.
  • The UK FCDO advises caution around Kingston and against driving in the city if you don't know it, so plan taxis or transfers.

Rooms

ROK has 168 rooms, including 47 suites, in the rebuilt 12-story tower. Being on Ocean Boulevard, the hotel looks out over Kingston Harbour, so ask for a harbor-facing room if the view matters to you. Check the current room types, sizes and bed configurations on Hilton’s official page when you book.

Food & drink

The hotel has a restaurant, a café and a bar, plus a lounge area. Hilton’s opening announcement promised “expansive food and beverage offerings”, but this guide couldn’t confirm the current restaurant names or hours from an official page. Check whether breakfast is in your rate. For a classic Kingston outing, Devon House is a short taxi ride uptown.

Pool & beach

There’s no beach downtown. ROK has a pool deck on the first floor, surrounded by palms, which also hosts outdoor events. Kingston’s usual beach trips, the boat to Lime Cay from Port Royal and the fish spots at Hellshire, haven’t had an official update since the hurricane, so ask at the front desk before you go.

Location

ROK is on Ocean Boulevard on the downtown Kingston waterfront, across the street from the Jamaica Conference Centre and steps from the National Gallery of Jamaica. Port Royal is out along the Palisadoes, the same road that takes you to Norman Manley International Airport; check Fort Charles opening hours before you go. Uptown, Devon House, Emancipation Park and the Bob Marley Museum are a taxi ride away, and the Trench Town Culture Yard is closer to downtown. The UK FCDO advises being cautious when traveling in and around Kingston, using the South Camp Road route from the airport, and not driving in the city if you don’t know it, so pre-book your transfer.
