Negril is at the far western tip of Jamaica, and the nearest international airport is Sangster International (MBJ) in Montego Bay. The drive takes about an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half, and you have more ways to make it than most people realize: your resort’s transfer, a pre-booked private transfer, an airport taxi, the Knutsford Express coach, or, if you’re feeling local, a route taxi. Here’s what each one involves, with the official figures and what I’d tell a friend. For immigration, customs and finding your ride inside the terminal, see my Montego Bay airport guide.

How far is Negril from Montego Bay airport?

It depends on which end of Negril you’re going to. Negril has two sides: Seven Mile Beach, the long beach along Norman Manley Boulevard, and the West End, the cliffs south of the roundabout in town. Here’s what the resorts and hotels themselves say:

Where you’re staying Distance from MBJ Drive time Figure from
Seven Mile Beach (Sandals Negril) 45.2 miles (72.7 km) About 75 minutes Sandals
Seven Mile Beach (Royalton Negril) Not given About 75 minutes Royalton
Bloody Bay, north end (Couples Negril) Not given About 1 hour 30 minutes Couples
Bloody Bay, north end (Riu Negril) About 80 km (50 miles) Not given Riu
West End cliffs (The Caves) 52 miles About 80 minutes The Caves
West End cliffs (Rockhouse) Not given About 90 minutes Rockhouse

Plan on 75 to 90 minutes in normal traffic. Add time in the afternoon rush through Montego Bay, and for stops: shared transfers often drop off at several resorts along the way.

The route

From the airport, the road heads west along the north coast through Montego Bay’s suburbs, past Hopewell and Lucea in Hanover, then on through Green Island and into Negril at the Bloody Bay end. It’s the main coast road all the way: two lanes, busy in places, with plenty of speed bumps through the towns. On a clear day the sea is on your right most of the way, and it’s a good first look at country Jamaica.

Resort transfer

The easiest option, and at some Negril resorts it’s part of the package: Sandals Negril, Beaches Negril and Couples Negril all list round-trip airport transfers as included. Sandals and Couples also have their own lounges in the airport’s Ground Transportation Hall. If you want paid help through arrivals at the airport itself, see my guide to the Club Mobay VIP lounge. If your resort doesn’t include it, most will still book one for you; ask when you book, not when you land.

Private pre-booked transfer

Transfer and tour companies have desks in the Ground Transportation Hall at Sangster, and MBJ lists which booking sites and tour operators each one serves. JUTA Negril has its own desk there too. A private transfer costs more than a shared shuttle, but it’s one price for the car, so for a family of four or a group it can work out close to what you’d pay in coach fares and taxis, and you go straight to your door. West End hotels such as Rockhouse and The Caves arrange private transfers for their guests.

Airport taxi

If you land with nothing booked, go to the Authorized Airport Taxi desk just outside the customs exit, which MBJ says JUTA and JCAL share. Agree the fare before you get in: Jamaican taxis aren’t metered. The Government of Canada advises using JUTA-authorized taxis, which carry red and white “PP” plates and a lime-green JUTA sticker, and the UK advises using Jamaica Tourist Board-approved drivers, who carry photo ID and a blue JTB sticker on the windshield. Don’t take a ride from someone who approaches you outside.

Knutsford Express

Knutsford Express runs scheduled coaches from its terminal right next to the airport to its Negril station on Beach Road. Its fare table, checked October 8, 2026, lists Sangster MBJ to Negril at J$2,500 for an adult, J$2,350 booked online, J$2,050 for a child aged 2 to 12 and J$2,200 for a senior, one way. Fares change, so check the price and the day’s departures on the Knutsford site when you book.

The airport station’s passenger desk is listed as open 4:30am to 7:30pm daily, and the Negril station 5:15am to 8pm. Knutsford doesn’t stop along the road, and the Negril station isn’t at your hotel’s door, so budget for a short taxi at the Negril end. See my Knutsford Express guide for luggage rules and how to book.

Route taxi or bus

This is how a lot of Jamaicans make the trip, and it’s the cheapest way, but I’d only suggest it if you know Jamaica, travel light and aren’t in a hurry. Route taxis and minibuses don’t run from the airport itself: you’d go into downtown Montego Bay first, then take a vehicle heading west. They leave when they’re full, stop anywhere along the road, and you may have to change in Lucea. Look for red plates: the Transport Authority licenses route taxis and buses and sets their fares, and it warns against unlicensed “robot” taxis. The Canadian government advises visitors to avoid city buses.

Driving yourself

It’s a straightforward drive on the main coast road, but we drive on the left, and the road is busy and narrow through the towns. If you’re picking up a rental at the airport, read my guide to renting a car and driving in Jamaica first.

Safety on the road to Negril

  • Use licensed transport. The safest options are your resort’s transfer, a named transfer company, the airport taxi desk or Knutsford Express.
  • Don’t plan stops in Green Island. The US State Department’s advisory names the Green Island area of Hanover, which is on this road, among the places it advises US travelers to reconsider because of crime. Driving through is normal; just don’t plan to stop there.
  • Arrive in daylight if you can. Country roads are poorly lit, and the coast road through the towns is easier to read in daylight. If your flight lands late, book a transfer rather than driving yourself.
  • For the full picture, read what the official safety advice for Jamaica says.

Which should you pick?

My take: if you’re staying at an all-inclusive, use its transfer, included or not. You’ve just flown in; let someone else handle the road. For a villa, a West End cliff hotel or a family of four or more, a private pre-booked transfer is worth it. If you’re one or two people traveling light and landing before mid-afternoon, Knutsford Express is the best value, and the coaches are comfortable. Save the route taxi for your second trip.
