Jewel Runaway Bay in St. Ann is a premier, family-friendly hotel that offers a lot to take in. With 266 rooms, it sees a lot of traffic too. After reading a host of reviews, most of which were positive, I decided it would be a good idea to see what this resort was all about. Below is my take.

What I liked

  • Comfy accommodations: rooms are large and offer a traditional setting that is charming and cozy.
  • Entertainment value: enjoy live, round-the-clock entertainment at no extra cost.
  • Overall value for money: lots of extras come with the all-inclusive package which makes it seem totally worth it.
  • Food choices: plenty to savour from six restaurants serving up a good variety of menu choices.
  • Numerous activities: there are plenty of ways to pass the time, on or off the property.

What I disliked

  • Noise: can get a bit rowdy and crowded, but expected at a family-friendly resort of this magnitude.

Overall Assessment

Jewel Runaway Bay tries to satisfy more than one target market: parents trying to give their kids (and themselves) an excellent vacation experience, and romantic travelers looking to unwind and relax. And it’s fair to say that the hotel does a reasonably good job meeting the expectations of most guests.

For family-oriented visitors, kids have a lot to look forward to, from a vibrant and supervised kids’ centre to various kid-friendly features and activities, including a water park and outdoor play space.

Adults traveling alone have many fun and entertaining activities to indulge in, ranging from some land and water sports to a fitness center and a nightclub. You can even get pampered at the Radiant Spa, or even opt for an in-room massage.

Speaking of rooms, there are standard rooms and suites available at Jewel Runaway Bay, with some offering ocean view. All come with stocked minibars, flat screen TVs, four poster beds with carved wood and other pieces of furniture to help you feel right at home. The décor is pretty traditional, probably intentionally, to provide a home-away-from-home feel for guests. However, for me, there were signs of wear and tear here and there. Nonetheless, it was pretty comfortable. And being able to have breakfast on the back patio, right next to a cool plunge pool, was an awesome experience.

Note that if you don’t want to leave your room, in-room dining is available, and some suites come with a personal butler.

Outside, there is plenty to do, including watching movies by any of three large pools, soaking up some sun on the beach, playing golf next door, as well as tennis, basketball, and volleyball (all included in the price). There is also live music, laser tag, archery, fitness classes, and much more. Plus, depending on how long your stay is, you might also get to experience the weekly bonfire party.

When you’re exhausted from all the fun (or just from lazing around), you can eat your fill, and get refreshed at any of the six restaurants (serving Italian, Asian, American and other cuisines) and four bars serving up premium brinks and beverages.

For a complete vacation experience for the entire family, it’s a good idea to try out Jewel Runaway Bay. I think it is real value for money.
