Most visitors to Jamaica land at Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, the biggest of the island’s three international airports. It’s a modern airport and the arrival process is simple once you know the order: immigration, bags, customs, then the Ground Transportation Hall, where your transfer, taxi or rental car is waiting. Here’s how it works, what to have ready, and how to get from the terminal to your resort, using what MBJ Airports and the official operators publish.
Before you land: have your C5 form done
Every arriving passenger has to complete the Immigration/Customs C5 form. Jamaica Customs says arriving passengers must submit the electronic version at enterjamaica.gov.jm, and that it’s free. MBJ’s own passenger page tells you to complete it before arrival and to have a valid passport and, if you don’t live in Jamaica, your return ticket ready for the immigration officer.
My advice: do the form at home a few days before you fly, with your hotel’s address and your flight number in front of you, and keep the confirmation email on your phone. My step-by-step guide to the C5 form goes through every question. For which passport and visa you need, see do you need a passport to go to Jamaica.
Arriving at Sangster, step by step
1. Immigration Hall
From the plane you walk to the Immigration Hall. MBJ says customer service agents are on hand there to help arriving passengers, and the Jamaica Tourist Board’s paging desk, a health office and a Global Exchange currency counter are in the same hall. At the desk, the immigration officer checks your passport and C5 details, may ask where you’re staying and for how long, and stamps the date you have to leave.
MBJ lists its peak hours as 11am to 3pm. If you land in that window, expect a queue.
2. Baggage claim
Bags come out in the Baggage Claim Hall, where display monitors show which belt your flight is on. Luggage carts are free, according to MBJ, and red cap porters are available for a minimum of US$1 a bag.
3. Customs
Customs has separate lines for passengers with nothing to declare, passengers with items to declare, and special passengers (wheelchair users and unaccompanied minors). Hand over your passport with your declaration and any receipts. If you owe duty, MBJ says you can pay in cash, by Visa or Mastercard, by certified check, or with a local Multi-Link card. The Ministry of Agriculture also has an office in the Customs Hall, which is where fruit, plants and meat get checked.
4. Ground Transportation Arrivals Hall
Once you’re through customs, MBJ says customer service representatives greet you and point you to your hotel lounge or transport company. This hall is where you’ll find the resort lounges, the transfer and tour company desks, the car rental counters, and, just outside the customs exit, the authorized airport taxi desk.
Skipping the queue: Club Mobay
Club Mobay is the paid VIP service at Sangster, open to anyone whatever airline you fly. MBJ describes it as two arrival lounges and seven departure lounges, each themed around a piece of Jamaican history and culture. The arrival service, run by VIP Attractions, gives you an escorted, expedited trip through immigration and customs. Book ahead, and see my full guide to the Club Mobay VIP lounge at Montego Bay airport for what’s included, the current prices and whether it’s worth it.

Getting from the airport to your resort
| Option | Where to find it | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Resort transfer | Your resort’s lounge or transfer desk in the Ground Transportation Hall | All-inclusive guests whose package includes it |
| Pre-booked transfer company | Operator desks in the Ground Transportation Hall | Anyone who booked a transfer with a vacation package or online |
| Authorized airport taxi (JUTA or JCAL) | Shared taxi desk just outside the customs exit | Short trips around Montego Bay, or if nothing is booked |
| Knutsford Express coach | Knutsford’s own terminal next to the airport | Independent travelers heading to Negril, Ocho Rios or Kingston |
| Rental car | Rental counters in the Ground Transportation Hall | Confident drivers who want to explore |
Heading to Negril? My guide to getting from Montego Bay airport to Negril compares every option for that drive.
Resort transfers and hotel lounges
MBJ lists hotel lounges in the Ground Transportation Hall for resort groups including Sandals and Couples. They look after their own guests and arrange the ride to the resort. If your package includes transfers, find your resort’s lounge or the transfer company named on your voucher.
Transfer and tour companies
Big transfer companies such as Amstar, Jamaica Tours, Tropical Tours, Island Routes and JUTA Tours have desks in the Ground Transportation Hall, and MBJ lists which tour operators and booking sites each one serves. Check your voucher for the company’s name before you land so you know which desk to walk to.
Taxis
MBJ says two taxi companies, JUTA and JCAL, work at Sangster and share an Authorized Airport Taxi desk just outside the customs exit. Taxis in Jamaica aren’t metered, so agree the fare at the desk before you get in. The Government of Canada’s advice is to use JUTA-authorized taxis, which have red and white “PP” plates and a lime-green JUTA sticker on the window, and not to take unmarked cars. If someone outside offers you a ride, say no thanks and go to the desk.
Knutsford Express from the airport
Yes, Knutsford Express serves MBJ. Its Montego Bay airport terminal sits right next to Sangster, and its passenger desk there is listed as open 4:30am to 7:30pm daily. Coaches go to Negril, Falmouth, Ocho Rios, Kingston and other towns, station to station. Book on the Knutsford site and pick “Montego Bay Airport” as your departure point. My Knutsford Express guide has the fares, luggage rules and how to book.
Rental cars
MBJ says Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, Island, National, Payless, Sixt and Thrifty all have counters in the Ground Transportation Hall. Before you sign anything, read my guide to renting a car and driving in Jamaica: we drive on the left, and insurance is where most surprises happen.
Money and phones at the airport
- Currency exchange: Global Exchange runs the exchange counters at MBJ, in the Immigration Hall, the Ground Transportation Hall, the ticketing hall and the departures area. They’re open during the airport’s operating hours and take 11 currencies, including US, Canadian and Jamaican dollars, British pounds and euros.
- How much to change: you don’t need much on arrival. A little Jamaican cash covers tips, a drink and small purchases. The Bank of Jamaica publishes the official exchange rates every day, so you can see roughly what a fair rate looks like before you change money. My guide to money in Jamaica covers ATMs, cards and when US dollars work.
- Phone data: MBJ’s passenger services page doesn’t list a mobile phone store. The simplest option is to sort it before you fly: Digicel sells tourist eSIM plans on its website, a 3-day plan and a 28-day plan, which you can install at home and switch on when you land. Check your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM first, and check your home carrier’s roaming rates if you’d rather not switch.
Leaving from Sangster
For the trip home, MBJ’s security rules follow the familiar pattern: liquids in containers of 100 ml (3.4 oz) or less in one clear quart-size bag, and laptops out of their cases for screening. Powders of 12 oz or more go in checked bags, and that includes coffee and spices, so pack your Blue Mountain coffee in the suitcase unless you buy it after security. There’s a wide spread of food, bars and Jamaican shops once you’re through.
A local’s tips for arriving at MBJ
- Keep a pen in your carry-on. If anything goes wrong with the online form, you’ll want one.
- Have your hotel’s name, address and phone number written down, not just in an email you need data to open.
- If it’s your first time on the island, read what the official safety advice for Jamaica says before you go. Most of it is about taxis, cash and common sense.
- Several resorts around Montego Bay aren’t taking guests yet, so check yours in my guide to the best all-inclusive resorts in Montego Bay, or see where to stay in Montego Bay.
Questions people ask
How long does it take to get through Montego Bay airport?
It depends on how many flights land together. MBJ lists 11am to 3pm as its peak hours, when queues at immigration are longest. Having your C5 form done online before you fly, and your passport and hotel details ready, keeps your part quick. Club Mobay’s paid arrival service fast-tracks you through immigration and customs.
Is there a taxi stand at Montego Bay airport?
Yes. MBJ says JUTA and JCAL share an Authorized Airport Taxi desk just outside the customs exit. Taxis aren’t metered, so agree the fare before you leave, and don’t take rides from unmarked cars.
Does Knutsford Express go from Montego Bay airport?
Yes. Knutsford Express has a terminal right next to Sangster International, with the passenger desk listed as open 4:30am to 7:30pm daily. Coaches go to Negril, Falmouth, Ocho Rios, Kingston and other towns. Book on its website and choose Montego Bay Airport as your departure point.
Can I change money at Montego Bay airport?
Yes. Global Exchange has counters in the Immigration Hall, the Ground Transportation Hall, the ticketing hall and departures, open during airport operating hours, and takes 11 currencies including US and Canadian dollars, pounds and euros.
Do I still get an immigration form on the plane?
The paper card handed out on planes was replaced by the online C5 form in September 2023. Complete it free at enterjamaica.gov.jm before you fly; Jamaica Customs says it’s required for all arriving passengers.
