There’s no bad month to come to Jamaica, but there is a right month for you. It depends on what matters most: the driest weather, the lowest prices, the fewest people, a festival, or keeping hurricane risk as low as it goes. This guide is about those trade-offs: crowds, prices in general, events and hurricane season. For the rain and temperatures month by month, see my Jamaica weather guide, which runs on Meteorological Service of Jamaica data.
Jamaica’s travel seasons at a glance
Jamaicans in the hotel business split the year into a winter season and a summer season. The table below is how that plays out for visitors. Prices here are general patterns, not quotes: rates change by resort and by week, so compare the dates you want.
| Period | Crowds | Prices in general | Weather | Hurricane risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-December to early January | Busiest of the year | Highest | Dry season starts; showery in Portland | None to speak of (season ends Nov 30) |
| January to mid-April | Busy, with a jump at spring break and Easter | High | Dry season; February is the driest month | Outside the season |
| Mid-April to June | Moderate | Lower than winter | Early rains, heaviest in May | Season opens June 1; early storms are uncommon |
| July and August | Busier again with summer school vacations and Jamaicans traveling home | Mid-range | Hot; July often fairly dry on the north coast | Rising through August |
| September to mid-November | Quietest | Often the lowest | Wettest stretch of the year | Highest; peak on September 10 |
| Mid-November to mid-December | Quiet, building toward Christmas | Lower than Christmas | Drying out in the west and south | Low and falling to the end of the season |
High season: mid-December to mid-April
This is the winter season, when North Americans and Europeans come for dry, sunny weather. The Met Service describes December to March as the dry season, and it’s when the heat is easiest. It’s also when the resorts are fullest and rates are at their highest, with Christmas to New Year the peak of the peak.
Within high season, a few weeks stand out:
- Christmas and New Year: the busiest and dearest weeks of the year. My guide to Jamaica in December covers the weather and how Jamaicans celebrate.
- Spring break: March is busy with students and families from the US and Canada, especially at the big resorts in Montego Bay, Negril and Ocho Rios.
- Easter: Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays, so Jamaicans travel too. In the next season, Easter Sunday falls on March 28, 2027.
My take: January after the first week, and February, are the sweet spot of high season. The Christmas crowd has gone home, the weather is at its most reliable, and February brings Reggae Month.
Shoulder season: mid-April to June
Once Easter passes, prices ease and the beaches get quieter. The trade-off is rain: the Met Service counts April and May as the early wet season, and May is one of the wettest months of the year, though it usually comes as heavy afternoon showers rather than whole days of rain. June is often a pleasant gap before the main rains. Hurricane season officially starts on June 1, but storms that early are uncommon (see the month-by-month table below).
Late April to June is the time I’d suggest to most couples and anyone who wants a good resort without paying winter rates.
Summer: July and August
Summer is busier than you might think. School vacations bring families, and many Jamaicans living abroad come home for the summer, especially around Emancipation Day (August 1) and Independence Day (August 6), both public holidays. Reggae Sumfest, the island’s biggest music festival, has usually been held in July. It’s hot, around 92°F on average in Montego Bay in July and August, and the hurricane season starts to build in August.

Low season: September to mid-November
This is the quietest and usually the cheapest time to visit, for a reason: it’s the heart of hurricane season, and October is the wettest month islandwide.
If your dates are flexible and you’ve read your resort’s hurricane policy, this can be good value. It’s not the time for a fixed date you can’t move, like a wedding.
Hurricane risk by month
The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, according to the US National Hurricane Center. Based on the 1991–2020 averages, an average season has 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes across the whole Atlantic basin, not just near Jamaica. Here’s how the risk builds through the season, using the NHC’s climatology.
| Months | What the NHC data shows | What it means for a trip |
|---|---|---|
| December to May | Outside the official season | Hurricanes are very rare; book freely |
| June and July | The first named storm of an average season forms around June 20; early hurricanes are possible but uncommon | Low risk. Hurricane Beryl passed just south of Jamaica on July 3, 2024 |
| August | The first hurricane of an average season forms around August 11 | Risk rising; keep plans flexible |
| Mid-August to mid-October | Most activity, with the peak on September 10 | Highest risk |
| Late October and November | Activity tapering off to the end of the season on November 30 | Lower, but late storms still happen |

Festivals and events to plan around
Festival dates move from year to year. Here’s what was confirmed when I checked on October 8, 2026.
| Event | When it’s usually held | Next dates |
|---|---|---|
| Rebel Salute (roots reggae, St Ann) | Mid-January | Not announced. There was no Rebel Salute in Jamaica in 2026 because of Hurricane Melissa. |
| Reggae Month | All of February, with Bob Marley’s birthday on February 6 | The program for the next Reggae Month hadn’t been published. |
| Carnival in Jamaica (Kingston) | Spring, with the road march the Sunday after Easter in recent years | Xodus Carnival has announced its road march for Sunday, April 4, 2027. |
| Reggae Sumfest (Montego Bay) | July | Not announced. In 2026 it was a single night on July 18 at Plantation Cove in St Ann. |
| Emancipation and Independence (Emancipendence) | August 1 to 6 | Fixed dates; both are public holidays. |
| Christmas and Grand Market | December 24 to 26 | Fixed dates; Christmas Day and Boxing Day are public holidays. |

The best time to visit by traveler type
- Families: the school breaks work, as long as you book early. Late June and July give you long, hot days and low hurricane risk; Christmas is festive but costs the most. My list of the best all-inclusive family resorts in Jamaica is a good place to start.
- Couples and honeymooners: late April to June for value and quieter beaches, or January and February for the most reliable weather. See the best honeymoon resorts in Jamaica.
- Weddings: December to April, the dry season and outside hurricane season. For the paperwork, see getting married in Jamaica.
- Budget travelers: September to mid-November is usually cheapest, with the hurricane caveats above. Mid-November to mid-December and late April to June are the safer bargains.
- Music lovers: February for Reggae Month, July if Sumfest is on, and January if Rebel Salute returns.
- Hikers and coffee lovers: the dry months of January to March are best for the Blue Mountains, before the early rains turn the trails muddy. Check trail conditions with your guide before you go, since landslides can close mountain trails.
- Anyone who hates crowds: avoid Christmas, New Year, spring break and Easter. Locals will tell you the island feels most relaxed in May, June and November.
Before you book
Some resorts on the Rose Hall strip and around Montego Bay are still closed after the 2025 hurricane, with several reopening in December 2026 and others in 2027, so check that your resort is open for your dates: start with my picks for the best all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica, which only include open resorts.
Local tips for picking dates
- Weekend flights around Christmas, New Year and Easter fill first. Book those months ahead, or fly midweek if you can. My guide to finding cheap flights to Jamaica has more ways to pay less.
- For hurricane season trips, book refundable or changeable rates and buy travel insurance when you book, not when a storm shows up on the map.
- If a festival is the reason for the trip, wait for the organizer’s dates, then book fast: hotels near the venues fill up with Jamaicans as well as visitors.
