My local take

The Courtleigh is one of the long-standing New Kingston business hotels, on Knutsford Boulevard right beside its sister hotel, the Jamaica Pegasus. Breakfast is included, there’s a pool, a 24-hour business center and free parking, and it has more suites than most hotels in the area, from office suites to one-bedroom suites with full kitchens. My take: it’s the practical pick for a week or more of work in Kingston, or for a family that needs a two-bedroom suite.

It’s a classic business hotel rather than a design hotel, and the spa and extra restaurant are at the Pegasus next door, not in the building. For a leisure trip, you’re well placed: Emancipation Park is on the doorstep and the Bob Marley Museum and Devon House are a short drive.

If it’s not quite right, S Hotel Kingston has more style and a pool open into the evening, and Altamont Court is the smaller, simpler option nearby. Also look at the Jamaica Pegasus next door and Courtyard by Marriott Kingston, or see where to stay in Kingston.

  • 24-hour business center, free Wi-Fi throughout and free patrolled parking.

What to know before booking

  • The spa and the Blue Window restaurant are at the Jamaica Pegasus, not at the Courtleigh itself.
  • The pool closes at 6 pm.
  • It's a traditional business hotel; if you want modern design, S Hotel Kingston or the Marriott-brand hotels fit better.
  • It's a city hotel: there is no beach.

Rooms

Deluxe King and Deluxe Double rooms are 264 sq ft, the double with two mahogany double beds and a work area. The One Bedroom King Suite (528 sq ft) has a four-poster king bed, a separate living area and the option of a kitchenette, and the Executive Office Suite (528 sq ft) adds a full workspace. Upstairs, the Penthouse rooms and suites have balconies, up to the 788 sq ft Penthouse Two Bedroom Suite, which is the one for families, and the 1,052 sq ft Presidential Suite. Rooms come with a pillow menu, LG smart TVs, free Wi-Fi and room service. All rooms are non-smoking, and two accessible rooms have roll-in showers.

Food & drink

Breakfast is a buffet at Alexander’s Restaurant, off the lobby, and it’s included. Mingles Bar & Lounge is the after-work bar, and the Pool Bar does light snacks and drinks. Next door at the Jamaica Pegasus, the Blue Window is known for breakfast spreads, brunch and themed food nights. Free grab-and-go coffee and tea is set out in the lobby from 5 am. My take: Devon House is a short drive for dinner and an ice cream, and that’s the move on your first night.

Pool & beach

There’s no beach in New Kingston. The Courtleigh has an outdoor pool open daily from 6 am to 6 pm, a gym on the first floor, and tennis on the two lit courts at the Jamaica Pegasus. Kingston’s usual beach trips, the boat to Lime Cay from Port Royal and the fish spots at Hellshire, haven’t had an official update since the hurricane, so ask at the front desk before you go.

Location

The hotel is at 85 Knutsford Boulevard, the main strip of New Kingston, within walking distance of embassies, offices and Emancipation Park. The Courtleigh puts Norman Manley International Airport about 30 minutes and 18 km away. The UK Foreign Office advises visitors who don’t know Kingston not to drive in the city, and notes that most people use the South Camp Road (Humming Bird) route to and from the airport, so a hotel transfer or a registered taxi is the simple answer. Nearby: the Bob Marley Museum, Devon House, Hope Gardens, Trench Town Culture Yard and the National Gallery of Jamaica downtown, and the Blue Mountains for a Blue Mountain coffee tour. See where to stay in Kingston for the wider city.
