My local take

Locals never stopped calling this place Coyaba. For about 10 years it was run as Zoëtry Montego Bay, first by AMResorts and later inside Hyatt’s Inclusive Collection, but the Robertson family owned it the whole time. After Hurricane Melissa they took back the management, brought back the old name and reopened on a bed-and-breakfast basis, with an all-inclusive option, as Coyaba offered before its Zoëtry years, planned for around November or December. Some of the long-serving staff, including the executive chef, have come back with them.

My take: this suits couples and independent travelers who want a small, quiet beach resort near the airport, breakfast included, and the freedom to eat in Montego Bay at night.

Rooms run from 37 m² to 60 m², with a king or two double beds, and the swim-out rooms have a pool off the balcony. Every room has free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a ceiling fan, mini-fridge, coffee maker, flat-screen TV, safe and private balcony, with double sinks and a walk-in shower. Some rooms add soaking tubs, sleeper sofas or accessible features. Rooms take up to 3 adults, or 2 adults and 2 children, and an extra person must be requested when you book.

Food & drink

Rates currently include continental breakfast. Lotus & Lily is the main dining room for breakfast and dinner, Dock’s Caribbean serves lunch by the pool, The Polo Grounds is the evening sports bar and grill with a pool table, and Cocktales is the lobby bar, with a pianist on some nights. Room service runs until 9 pm. Dinner has a dress code: no tank tops or swimwear, and men need long trousers. My take: being on a breakfast plan near Montego Bay is no hardship. You’re close enough to eat out on the Hip Strip or in Rose Hall.

Pool & beach

A private white-sand beach runs the length of the property, about 400 ft, with a pool next to Dock’s restaurant. Rates include the pool, beach, loungers, beach towels and the fitness room. There’s also a spa on site, and Coyaba says watersports, golf, diving and horseback riding are within a 5-minute drive.

Coyaba is on the Rose Hall Main Road, 5 miles east of Montego Bay and about 10 minutes from Sangster International Airport.
