Jamaica is small on a map and bigger on the road. Most visitors stay in one resort town and do a day or two out, so the best day trip depends on where you’re based. This guide is organized that way: pick your base, then pick the trip. Everything here was checked against official sources and Jamaican media in October 2026. Places I couldn’t confirm as open are left out or clearly flagged.
A local rule for all of them: start early, use a licensed taxi (red PP plates) or a licensed tour operator, and agree the price and the return time before you leave.
From Montego Bay
Rose Hall Great House
A restored Georgian great house on the hill east of Montego Bay, with the story of Annie Palmer, the “White Witch of Rose Hall”, that every Jamaican child grows up hearing. Rose Hall lists the day tour Monday to Saturday, 9:15 am to 4:00 pm, closed on Sundays and public holiday dates, and runs a separate haunted night tour. It’s a half day at most, so it pairs well with a beach afternoon. See the Rose Hall Great House guide.
Rafting on the Martha Brae
A slow ride on a bamboo raft down the Martha Brae River near Falmouth, poled by a licensed raft captain. It isn’t white water; it’s quiet and green. Since the 2025 hurricane the banks look more open than in older photos, while the vegetation grows back. See the Martha Brae rafting guide.
A day in Negril
Negril is roughly 90 minutes by road from Montego Bay, so a day trip works if you leave early. Spend the day on Seven Mile Beach, then head to the West End cliffs for sunset at Rick’s Café, which lists itself as open every day from noon to 10 pm with no cover charge. See the Rick’s Café guide.
From Ocho Rios
Dunn’s River Falls, then a quieter waterfall
Dunn’s River, just west of town, is the classic: a guided climb up terraced falls that ends on the beach. Go early on a day with no cruise ship in port. If you want a second waterfall, Konoko Falls above town is gentler and the Blue Hole at Island Gully Falls is for swimming and jumping. See the Dunn’s River Falls guide.
Mystic Mountain
A chairlift up the hillside west of Ocho Rios to a bobsled ride, zipline and pool at the top. Mystic Mountain lists its hours as Tuesday to Sunday, 8 am to 5 pm, closed Mondays, with last admission at 3 pm and earlier for the zipline. It suits families with older children and anyone who wants thrills rather than water. See the Mystic Mountain guide.
Driving Fern Gully
Fern Gully is the stretch of the A3 that climbs south out of Ocho Rios along an old river gully, shaded by tall trees and lined with ferns. The National Library of Jamaica describes it as about 4.8 km long, with more than 500 species of fern, the first planted in the 1880s. There’s no gate or ticket: you drive through it, slowly, on the way inland or to Kingston, and craft vendors set up along the roadside. The road is narrow and winding, so let a local driver handle it and only stop where there’s room to pull over. I found no closure notice this year, and in September 2026 the NWA and tourism agencies did road repairs and cleanup there as part of an Ocho Rios clean-up. Ask your driver whether there are works on the day.

From Negril or the South Coast
YS Falls, the Black River and the Pelican Bar
This is the classic south coast loop, and it’s a long day from Negril on country roads, easier if you’re staying in Treasure Beach. St Elizabeth was one of the parishes hit hardest by Hurricane Melissa, so the status of each stop matters:
- YS Falls: open, with its pools and falls; the grounds are less lush than before while they recover. See the YS Falls guide.
- Black River safari: boat tours through the morass to see crocodiles and birds. In March 2026 the Jamaica Observer reported three boats running at Black River Safari, fewer than before, so book ahead.
- Floyd’s Pelican Bar: the wooden bar on a sandbar out at sea, reached by boat from Parottee or Treasure Beach. It has been rebuilt and is smaller than before.
Mayfield Falls in Westmoreland, once a popular trip from Negril, isn’t on this list because I couldn’t confirm it’s receiving visitors.
From Kingston
The Bob Marley Museum and Devon House
Bob Marley’s home at 56 Hope Road is now the Bob Marley Museum, with guided tours that the museum books on its website. Devon House, a short drive away, is a 19th-century mansion with gardens and the ice cream shop every Kingstonian knows. Together they make an easy city day. See the Bob Marley Museum guide.
Port Royal and Lime Cay
Drive out along the Palisadoes to Port Royal, the old pirate town at the mouth of Kingston Harbour, then take a boat to Lime Cay, a small sandbar island with clear water. Agree the boat fare and pickup time before you leave the dock, and bring shade and water.
The Blue Mountains
The road up from Kingston climbs quickly into cool coffee country, with farms that offer coffee tours and views back over the city. The roads are narrow and steep, so go with a driver who knows them rather than driving yourself.
From Port Antonio
Portland is Jamaica’s greenest parish. From Port Antonio you can fill a day with the Blue Lagoon, Frenchman’s Cove beach (paid beach pass) and Reach Falls, about 45 minutes east. The Jamaica National Heritage Trust says the Blue Lagoon is free to the public. For Reach Falls, call ahead: the UDC lists it as open Wednesday to Sunday, but I couldn’t find a recent notice for it, and the UDC invited proposals in 2026 to lease and develop the site.
Getting around for day trips
- Tours with pickup are the simplest choice from the resorts, because most attractions are outside town.
- Knutsford Express runs scheduled coaches between towns on the north and south coasts, with connections to Portland, St Mary and Negril. It gets you between towns, but you’ll still need a taxi to most attractions.
- Driving yourself is possible but tiring. Jamaicans drive on the left, and country roads are narrow, often potholed, and slow.

Questions people ask
Can you do a day trip from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios?
Yes, but it’s a long day: Ocho Rios is roughly two hours by road from Montego Bay. Leave early and book a tour with pickup, which is easier than public transport to Dunn’s River and the other attractions.
Are the south coast attractions open?
The main ones are. YS Falls and Floyd’s Pelican Bar are open, and the Black River safari was running with a reduced fleet by March 2026, according to the Jamaica Observer. Check opening days before you set off.
What is the best day trip from Negril?
The south coast loop to YS Falls, the Black River and the Pelican Bar is the classic, though it’s a long day. For something closer, stay in Negril and spend the evening at the West End cliffs.
Do I need a car for day trips in Jamaica?
No. Most visitors use tours with hotel pickup or a licensed taxi, and Knutsford Express coaches link the main towns. Agree the price and return time before you leave.
