My local take
Chukka is the biggest name in Jamaican tours, and Ocean Outpost at Sandy Bay is its main base on the western side of the island. It sits by the sea in Hanover, among farming and fishing communities, on the coast road between Montego Bay and Lucea. Chukka now sells it as one pass: you pay once, then choose from the zipline over the water, the horseback ride and swim, an ATV or dune buggy safari, a party catamaran, a reef snorkel trip and a truck safari into the countryside. Horseback riding into the sea is what Chukka built its name on, and it is still the activity people ask about most.
It suits active families, groups and anyone staying around Montego Bay or Negril who wants a full day of doing things rather than lying on a beach. It is less suited to people who want a quiet day or small children under 6, who are too young for most of the activities. My take: it is the easiest way from the western resorts to fit horseback riding, a zipline and a boat trip into one day, and the pass makes more sense than paying for single tours if you plan to do at least two or three things. Book well ahead, because Chukka’s own early-booking discounts are large.
For a slower day on the water, see our guide to Martha Brae River rafting near Falmouth, or spend a beach day at Doctor’s Cave Beach Club on the Hip Strip. For where to stay, see our Montego Bay guide.
How to get there
Sandy Bay is on the main north coast road (the A1) in Hanover, west of Montego Bay on the way to Lucea and Negril. Chukka’s map pin puts the outpost on the coast at Sandy Bay. Plan on roughly 30 to 45 minutes by road from the Montego Bay hotels and around an hour or more from Negril, depending on traffic and where you start.
Most people don’t drive. Chukka’s passes include round-trip transfers from the Montego Bay and Negril areas, with drop-off back at your pickup point. If you’re staying in Hanover, at Round Hill in Hopewell or Grand Palladium near Lucea, you’re already on this side of Montego Bay, so the ride is shorter. Cruise passengers book Chukka tours through their cruise line instead.
What to expect
The Ocean Outpost Pass gives you access to the park’s activities during operating hours, and you do as much or as little as you like. Chukka lists the Horseback Ride ‘N’ Swim, the Zipline Over the Ocean with a splash landing, an ATV or Dune Buggy Safari, a Party Catamaran Cruise, a Reef Snorkel Adventure and a Truck Safari. Chukka bills the zipline as the only one in the world that goes over and into the ocean: it starts from an old guango tree, runs across floating platforms and finishes with a hammock line into the sea. There is also an infinity pool, Appleton rum tasting and crafts from local Sandy Bay vendors.
Ocean bamboo rafting with local raft captains, some of them fishermen from the community, is an extra US$10 per person. It can only be reserved and paid for on arrival, and only by pass holders. Chukka describes it as a one-hour ride with a fresh coconut and a limestone foot massage.
On Chukka’s site, the pass starts at US$163.90 per person and the web-only Best of the West package (ocean zipline, catamaran or snorkel, truck safari and rum tasting) starts at US$129, both with transfers. Chukka advertises early-booking discounts of 25 to 50 percent when you book 14 or more days ahead. Food and drinks cost extra, and lockers and aqua shoes are for sale. Prices change often, so check the official site before you book.
Some activities are scheduled on site, and Chukka warns that the park can be crowded at peak times with waits for popular activities. Bring valid photo ID for check-in, and a valid driver’s license if you want to drive an ATV.
Local tips
- Book at least two weeks ahead to get Chukka's early-booking discount, which grows the further ahead you book.
- Wear closed-toe sneakers or water shoes. They are required for the horseback ride, zipline, ATV and dune buggy, and you won't be allowed on without them.
- Wear your swimsuit under your clothes and bring a towel and a change of clothes. The horseback ride, zipline landing and snorkel all get you wet.
- When you arrive, ask which activities need a time slot and book those first, then fill the gaps with the ones you can do at your leisure.
- Bring cash or a card for food, drinks, photos and the bamboo raft add-on, and small bills for tips.
Before you go
- Age limits matter: the minimum age is 6 for the horseback ride, snorkeling, zipline and truck safari, 16 with a valid driver’s license to drive an ATV, and 18 for the party catamaran.
- There are weight limits: 230 lb for the horseback ride, 265 lb for the zipline, 275 lb for snorkeling, 300 lb for the truck safari and 400 lb for the ATV. Dune buggy passengers must be at least 4 ft 9 in tall.
- Chukka says the park is not wheelchair accessible and not suitable for pregnant women.
- Hanover took a hard hit from Hurricane Melissa in October 2025. Chukka reopened its sites in stages between November and June, and the outpost is selling passes again, but the coastline and trees may look thinner than in older photos.
- Weather can suspend water and zipline activities, and Chukka says busy days bring waits, so don’t expect to do everything on the list in one visit.
