Seven Mile Beach, Negril: a local's guide

No car?

From the Negril hotels, use a licensed taxi (red PP plates) and agree the fare first; route taxis also run along Norman Manley Boulevard. From Montego Bay, book a Negril beach tour or a private driver for the day.

My local take

Seven Mile Beach is the reason Negril exists as a resort town. It runs north from the town center along Norman Manley Boulevard, with resorts, small hotels, beach bars and open stretches of sand all sharing the same calm, shallow water. The name is generous: Lonely Planet puts the real length at closer to four miles. Nobody in Negril minds. It faces west, so this is one of the few big Jamaican beaches where the sun goes down over the sea in front of you.

It suits almost everyone: families, couples, people who want a beach bar and people who just want to walk. If you want lively, stay toward the middle near the bars. If you want quiet, head north toward Bloody Bay, or come early in the morning before the vendors set up. My take: spend at least one full day on the sand, walk a long stretch of it, and be in the water or on the beach at sunset. If you want cliffs and deep water instead of sand, that is the West End, the other half of Negril.

For the cliff side of town, see my guide to Rick’s Café. If you are comparing beaches across the island, Doctor’s Cave Beach Club is the classic Montego Bay pick. For hotels and the rest of the area, see my Negril guide.

How to get there

In Negril: Norman Manley Boulevard runs behind the whole beach, from the roundabout in town north to the Hanover side, so every hotel on the strip is on or across the road from the sand. If you are staying at a beachfront resort, such as Beaches Negril on one of the widest stretches, you just walk out. From the West End cliff hotels, it is a short taxi ride back through town to the beach.

From Montego Bay: Negril is roughly 75 to 80 km west of Sangster International Airport along the coast road through Lucea, about 1 hour 30 minutes by road. For a day trip, most people book a tour from their hotel or hire a licensed driver for the day.

Public access: Long Bay Beach Park, run by the Urban Development Corporation, or UDC, is the main public beach park on the strip, on the northern half of the beach. The UDC gives its hours as 9 am to 5 pm daily, with a small entry fee.

What to expect

How the beach is laid out. From the town end, the first stretch has small hotels, bars and restaurants close together, with music and the most foot traffic. Further north, the big all-inclusives take over, with long runs of loungers in front of each one. Most people walk the waterline between properties; resort loungers, bars and pools are for guests. The water is generally calm and shallow close to shore, which is why families like it.

Long Bay Beach Park. The UDC set up Long Bay Beach 1 (4.16 hectares) in 1997 to make sure Negril had a proper public beach, and added Long Bay 2 (2.07 hectares) in 2001. It is open 9 am to 5 pm daily; non-residents pay US$3 for adults and US$1 for children, and residents pay J$150 and J$50. In April 2026 someone put up an unauthorized fence across part of the Long Bay property; the UDC had it removed within an hour of hearing about it and restated that its beaches stay open to the public.

Bloody Bay. At the north end, past a small point, the beach curves into Bloody Bay, on the Hanover side. It is quieter and more sheltered, and most of its frontage belongs to resorts, including Couples Negril and the two Riu hotels. Locals tell different stories about the name, from whalers to pirates; nobody agrees.

Water sports and sunset. The resorts run their own non-motorized water sports for guests, and independent operators along the beach sell boat trips, snorkeling and similar activities. Jet skis are a special case: Jamaica’s Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) has said that commercial jet ski rides are banned and that private jet skis can’t operate from public bathing beaches, including Negril’s. The waters off Negril are part of the Negril Marine Park. At the end of the day, the whole beach turns west for sunset; any beach bar on the strip works.

After Hurricane Melissa. The storm hit western Jamaica in October 2025. The Ministry of Tourism said Negril would officially reopen for business on December 15, 2025, and Afar reported in January 2026 that wave action had actually pushed sand back onto beaches in areas like Negril. Some small beach businesses took longer to recover than the big hotels, so a bar or stall you remember may have changed.

Local tips

  • Walk the beach early in the morning, when the sand is cool, the water is flat and the vendors haven't set up yet.
  • If you want a public spot with an entry gate, use Long Bay Beach Park between 9 am and 5 pm, and carry small Jamaican dollar notes or US dollars for the fee.
  • Book boat trips and water sports through your hotel or an operator it recommends, and check the life jackets before you leave the shore.
  • Pick your sunset spot an hour early. The bars along the strip fill up as the sun drops.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and a hat. There is little shade on the open stretches between hotels.

Before you go

  • Vendors and people offering tours, rides or other things will approach you on the open stretches. A polite, firm “no thanks” is enough.
  • Don’t assume there is a lifeguard where you swim. Keep children close, and stay out of the water after drinking or when the sea is rough.
  • Keep valuables out of sight, and don’t leave bags alone on the sand while you swim.
  • Resort beach furniture, bars and pools are for guests only, and some properties have their own rules for the sand in front of them.
  • Walking the beach late at night is not a good idea. Take a taxi between bars after dark.

Questions people ask

Is Seven Mile Beach open after Hurricane Melissa?

Yes. The Ministry of Tourism said Negril would officially reopen for business on December 15, 2025, and the UDC’s Long Bay Beach Park was operating in April 2026, when the UDC removed an unauthorized fence to keep it open to the public. Some small beach businesses took longer to come back than the big hotels.

Is Seven Mile Beach in Negril free?

Walking the open stretches of sand costs nothing. Long Bay Beach Park, the UDC’s public beach park, charges non-residents US$3 for adults and US$1 for children, and residents J$150 and J$50. Resort facilities are for guests only.

Is Seven Mile Beach really seven miles long?

Not quite. Lonely Planet gives the real length as about four miles (6.5 km). The name has stuck anyway.

Where is Bloody Bay?

At the north end of Seven Mile Beach, on the Hanover side, past a small point. It is quieter and more sheltered than the main strip, and most of its frontage belongs to resorts such as Couples Negril and the Riu hotels.

Can you rent a jet ski on Seven Mile Beach?

You shouldn’t count on it. TPDCo has said commercial jet ski rides are banned in Jamaica and that private jet skis can’t operate from public bathing beaches, including Negril’s. Book other water sports through your hotel or an operator it recommends.
