Peter Tosh Museum, Kingston: a local's guide

Status unconfirmed. I couldn't confirm it's open right now. Check before you go; the guide below has open alternatives.

No car?

From a New Kingston hotel, take a licensed taxi (red PP plates) or walk. It pairs easily with a taxi to the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road.

My local take

Status: unconfirmed. I couldn’t find a current, dated notice from the museum or a recent Jamaican news report confirming that it is open to walk-in visitors. Its website still lists opening hours, but those pages were last updated in mid-2024. The latest event I could find there was the launch of Tosh Fest at the museum in October 2025, a couple of weeks before Hurricane Melissa. Kingston and St Andrew were not among the parishes the government named as worst affected by the storm, so there is no particular reason to think it was damaged. It’s simply that nobody has said, in public and recently, that the doors are open.

Peter Tosh, born Winston Hubert McIntosh in Grange Hill, Westmoreland, was a founding member of The Wailers with Bob Marley and Bunny Wailer, and the most militant voice of the three. The museum, a project of the Tosh estate and Pulse Investments, opened at the Pulse Centre in New Kingston in 2016, closed during the pandemic and reopened on his birthday in October 2023. My take: if it’s open, it is a short, worthwhile stop for anyone who knows “Legalize It” and “Equal Rights”, and it sits roughly 1.5 km from the Bob Marley Museum. Just call before you build a morning around it.

Two open alternatives close by: the Bob Marley Museum on Hope Road, which has fixed tour times and online booking, and Devon House, further down Hope Road. For the Trench Town side of the Wailers’ story, see my guide to the Trench Town Culture Yard Museum. For the rest of the city, see my Kingston guide.

How to get there

The museum gives its address as 38A Trafalgar Road in New Kingston, at the Pulse Centre. It is in the middle of the city’s hotel and office district, so from most New Kingston hotels it is a short taxi ride or a walk. The Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road is roughly 1.5 km away (straight-line map distance, approximate).

From Norman Manley International Airport, allow roughly 30 to 45 minutes by taxi, more at rush hour. From Ocho Rios, the North-South Highway brings you to Kingston in roughly 1.5 to 2 hours; from Montego Bay it is a long day, so it makes more sense as part of a night or two in Kingston.

What to expect

What it holds. The museum’s best-known piece is the guitar shaped like an M16 rifle. The Jamaica Observer reports it was made and first played by Bruno Coon of the California band Prairie Fire, and that it has been shown in Paris and São Paulo. The museum also displays the Order of the Companions of O.R. Tambo, a South African national honor given to Tosh after his death for his support of the anti-apartheid movement. The rest of the space covers his life, his albums and his activism. It is a small museum, so plan on about an hour.

What is known about opening. The museum’s website lists opening Monday to Saturday and closed on Sundays, with admission in US dollars for visitors and lower Jamaican-dollar rates for locals, children and student groups. Those pages haven’t been updated since mid-2024, and other listings give different closing times, so I’ve left the hours and prices out. Ask for both when you call.

How to check. The museum’s official contacts are +1 876-960-0049 and info@petertoshmuseum.com. Peter Tosh’s official Facebook and Instagram pages are linked from the museum’s site and are worth a look for recent posts.

Local tips

  • Call +1 876-960-0049 or email info@petertoshmuseum.com before you go and ask whether the museum is open that day, the hours and the current admission.
  • Do the Bob Marley Museum first, since it runs fixed tour times, then try the Tosh museum on the way back through New Kingston.
  • October 19 is Peter Tosh's birthday. The museum reopened on that date in 2023 and the family has held celebrations around it, so watch the official pages for anything planned that week.
  • Carry some Jamaican dollars even if you plan to pay by card, in case the card machine is down.

Before you go

  • Current opening isn’t confirmed. Don’t make a special trip without calling first.
  • The website’s hours and prices date from mid-2024, and other listings disagree on closing time.
  • It is a small museum. Fans will enjoy an hour; casual visitors may find the Bob Marley Museum the fuller visit.
  • No official accessibility details are published beyond staff being available to help, so ask when you call if you use a wheelchair.
