Tipping in Jamaica works much like it does in North America, with two differences that catch people out. Many all-inclusive resorts already include gratuities in the price, and one big brand doesn’t allow tipping at all. And a lot of restaurant bills already carry a service charge on top of tax. Here’s what the resorts and official sources say, and where tipping is simply local custom, what a Jamaican would tell a friend.
All-inclusive resorts: are tips included?
Often, yes. These are the policies the resorts publish, as listed in our resort guides and checked in October 2026.
| Resort or brand | Tipping policy |
|---|---|
| Couples (Negril, Swept Away, Sans Souci, Tower Isle) | No-tipping policy. Couples says part of the room rate covers a gratuity for all staff. |
| Sandals (Negril, Ochi, Dunn’s River, Royal Plantation and the reopening Montego Bay, South Coast and Caribbean Cay) | All taxes and gratuities included |
| Beaches Negril | All tips and taxes included |
| Excellence Oyster Bay | Taxes and gratuities included |
| Azul Beach Resort Negril | All taxes and gratuities included |
| Royalton Blue Waters, Royalton Negril and both Royalton Hideaways | Tips and gratuities included |
| Princess Grand Jamaica and Princess Senses The Mangrove | Gratuities included |
Couples is the one to know about. Its FAQ says tipping isn’t allowed at any of its four resorts. If someone made your week, Couples asks you to name them on the guest questionnaire, because managers use those comments to reward staff. Repeat guests can bring a personal gift, handed over through management with a note.
Where gratuities are included, you don’t owe anything more. Tipping extra is your choice, not an obligation. If your resort isn’t on this list, check its FAQ or booking terms before you go, because policies differ. Resorts that aren’t all-inclusive can work differently again: Half Moon, for example, adds a 15% service charge and a 10% resort fee to the room rate, plus taxes.
My take: if you’re the kind of traveler who likes to tip as you go, a resort with gratuities included is the easy choice, and a Couples resort is the one where you leave your wallet in the safe. See the best all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica for what else each one includes.
Restaurants: service charge, GCT and the tip
Read the bill before you tip. A Jamaican restaurant bill can carry three different things, and only one of them is a tip.
- General Consumption Tax (GCT): this is a tax, not a tip. Tax Administration Jamaica sets the standard rate at 15% (since April 1, 2020), with a 10% rate for tourism activities. Some menus include it in the price and some add it at the end.
- Service charge: many sit-down restaurants add one. Rick’s Café in Negril, for example, prices its menu in US dollars and adds 15% GCT and a 10% service charge. If you see a service charge on the bill, that’s the tip already paid.
- The tip: if there’s no service charge at a sit-down restaurant, leave one. Rick’s Café’s own FAQ says a gratuity of 10% to 15% is typical at restaurants throughout Jamaica.
At a cookshop, a patty shop or a roadside jerk stall where you order at the counter, nobody expects a tip. Growing up, we’d just say thanks and maybe tell them to keep the change on a small order. Taxis and airport transfers
Official advice is about which taxi to take, not what to tip. The Government of Canada says to use taxis authorized by JUTA, with red and white “PP” plates and a lime-green JUTA sticker, and to agree the fare before you set off, because taxis aren’t metered. At Sangster International in Montego Bay, the airport says JUTA and JCAL share an authorized taxi desk just outside the customs exit.
Tipping is on top of the fare you agreed. The driver who loads your bags, waits while you buy a snack or points out the sights along the way will appreciate a tip. A shared route taxi is different: the fare is set by the government and nobody expects a tip. The Jamaica Information Service’s report on the 2026 fare increase gives St Ann’s Bay to Ocho Rios as J$240 from July 2026. On the Knutsford Express coach, your ticket covers the trip.
If your resort includes airport transfers and gratuities, ask the resort whether that covers the transfer driver, so you know before you land.

Tour guides and drivers on day trips
Tours outside the resort are where tipping matters most. Guides at the waterfalls, the drivers who take you across the island for the day and the people who show you around a community museum often count on tips. When you book, check whether the price says gratuities are included; most tour prices don’t.
A local tip: at a climb like Dunn’s River, the guide leading your group up the falls, carrying your camera and taking the photos is working hard for you. Tip them directly, in cash, at the end.
Rafting captains
On a bamboo raft, the captain poles you down the river, tells the stories and takes the pictures. Our guides to Martha Brae rafting and rafting on the Rio Grande both say to bring cash for your captain, and on the Rio Grande tipping is expected. The rafting price, US$110 per raft for two adults when booked online at Martha Brae as of October 2026, doesn’t include it.
Spa, housekeeping and bars
- Spa: treatments cost extra at most resorts we cover, including the Sandals and Couples spas. At Couples the no-tipping policy still applies. Elsewhere, ask the spa whether a service charge is already on the bill before you add a tip.
- Housekeeping: at a hotel without included gratuities, my take is to leave something each day rather than one lump sum at the end, because the person cleaning your room can change during the week.
- Bars outside the resort: at a rum bar or beach bar, rounding up or leaving the small change is normal.
How much to tip: a local’s rule of thumb
There’s no law or official guideline on tipping in Jamaica, so treat this as what I’d tell a friend, not a rule.
| Who | My rule of thumb |
|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant, no service charge | 10% to 15%, the range Rick’s Café gives as typical |
| Sit-down restaurant with a service charge | Nothing more needed; a little extra for exceptional service |
| Counter service, cookshop, jerk stall | Not expected; keeping the change is a kind gesture |
| Taxi or private driver | Round up for a short ride; more if they wait, help with bags or show you around |
| Tour guide or rafting captain | About US$5 to US$10 per person for a half day, more for a full day or a private guide |
| Housekeeping (no gratuities included) | A few US dollars a day |
Tip in US dollars or Jamaican dollars?
Either is welcome. Use small notes: US$1, US$5 and US$10 bills, or Jamaican J$500 and J$1,000 notes. Don’t tip in US coins, because they’re hard to change in Jamaica.
For a sense of scale, the Bank of Jamaica’s weighted average rate on October 7, 2026 was about J$158 to J$160 to the US dollar, so a J$1,000 note is worth a little over US$6. The Bank issues notes of J$50, J$100, J$500, J$1,000, J$2,000 and J$5,000. The old paper (cotton) notes stopped being legal tender on July 1, 2025, so leftovers from an older trip won’t work as a tip; the Bank of Jamaica still exchanges them.

Questions people ask
Are tips included at all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica?
At many of them, yes. Sandals, Beaches Negril, Excellence Oyster Bay, Azul Beach Resort Negril, the Royalton resorts and the two Princess resorts list gratuities as included. Check your own resort’s FAQ, because policies differ.
Can you tip at Couples Resorts?
No. Couples has a no-tipping policy at all four of its Jamaica resorts and says part of the room rate covers a gratuity for staff. To thank someone, name them on the guest questionnaire.
Is the service charge on a Jamaican restaurant bill the tip?
Yes. If the bill shows a service charge, the tip is already paid. GCT on the same bill is a tax, not a tip. If there’s no service charge at a sit-down restaurant, Rick’s Café’s FAQ says 10% to 15% is typical in Jamaica.
Do you tip taxi drivers in Jamaica?
It’s customary for good service, on top of the fare you agreed before setting off. Shared route taxis run on government-set fares and nobody expects a tip.
Should I tip in US dollars or Jamaican dollars?
Either works. Bring small bills, and avoid US coins, which are hard to change in Jamaica. At the Bank of Jamaica’s October 7, 2026 rate, J$1,000 is a little over US$6.
