My local take
James Bond Beach takes its name from the first Bond film, Dr. No, which shot scenes here. It sits on a small peninsula in Oracabessa Bay, next to GoldenEye, the estate where Ian Fleming wrote the Bond novels. For years it ran as a paid beach with a bar, changing rooms and a lawn big enough for concerts. The government’s beach guide describes white sand about 427 meters long, coral reef offshore and parking for around 50 cars. The waters of Oracabessa Bay around it are a fish sanctuary.
Here is the honest status. The National Environment and Planning Agency’s beach guide lists James Bond Beach as a recreational beach but says it is closed to the public, and that the owner can be contacted to host private events. That guide is from NEPA’s archived website, and we found no newer notice from the owner, the Tourist Board or the Jamaican press saying the beach has reopened for day visitors, before or after Hurricane Melissa. Travel listings that still show hours and an entry fee don’t cite a source. My take: treat it as a private beach you may see from the road, not a beach day you can plan around. If you want sand and sea near Ocho Rios, go somewhere that is confirmed open.
For a beach that is open, try Ocho Rios Bay Beach, the town beach, or Mahogany Beach on the east side of Ocho Rios. Up in the hills behind Oracabessa is Sun Valley Plantation, though its status is also unconfirmed. For the wider area, see our Ocho Rios guide.
How to get there
The beach is just off the main road through Oracabessa, in St Mary, roughly 16 km (about 10 miles) east of Ocho Rios on the north coast highway. Plan on roughly 30 minutes by road from Ocho Rios town. From the resorts east of town, such as Couples Tower Isle, the drive is shorter. From Montego Bay it is roughly two hours or more each way.
What to expect
NEPA’s beach guide describes a beach of medium to coarse white sand, about 427 meters long and 20 meters wide, with coral reef offshore. It lists a restaurant and bar, a changing room, restrooms, a playfield and parking for around 50 vehicles, but it also says the beach is closed to the public. We couldn’t confirm which of those facilities still operate.
The bay around the beach is part of the Oracabessa Bay Fish Sanctuary, a marine protected area. Fishing is restricted inside sanctuaries, so if you do swim or snorkel anywhere in the bay, leave the reef and its fish alone.
Local tips
- Don't drive out on the strength of an old listing. Ask your hotel's tour desk or a licensed driver to confirm whether the beach is open to visitors before you go.
- If you are planning an event or wedding, NEPA's guide says the owner can be contacted for private events.
- Oracabessa is a working fishing town. Combine a drive through it with lunch in town or a stop at a confirmed open beach near Ocho Rios.
- Respect the fish sanctuary: no spearfishing, no taking shells or coral, and keep off the reef.
Before you go
- Public access is unconfirmed: the latest official information we found says the beach is closed to the public.
- Hours and entry fees on travel sites are unsourced, so we haven’t printed them.
- Don’t pay someone at the gate for unofficial entry; if it isn’t open, go elsewhere.
- It is about half an hour from Ocho Rios, so a wasted trip costs you most of a morning.
