Ocho Rios and Montego Bay are the two big resort towns on Jamaica’s north coast, about 60 miles apart. Montego Bay has the main airport, the Hip Strip and Rose Hall. Ocho Rios, in St Ann, is the activity town: waterfalls, river pools and adventure parks a short drive from the hotels. Both are cruise ports. Here’s how they compare when you’re choosing a base.

Things to do
Ocho Rios wins for days out. Dunn’s River Falls, the 960-foot climb of terraced cascades that runs onto a beach, is just west of town. Mystic Mountain, with its chairlift, bobsled and ziplines, is on the hill above town (closed Mondays). The Blue Hole at Island Gully Falls has river pools and rope swings in the hills (closed Saturdays), and Konoko Falls is a gentler garden-and-waterfall park. Green Grotto Caves and Nine Mile, where Bob Marley was born and is buried, are both within reach.
Montego Bay is more about history and the sea. Rose Hall Great House is just east of the city, with day tours from Monday to Saturday and a haunted night tour from Wednesday to Saturday. Martha Brae rafting is near Falmouth, a half day out. Downtown has Sam Sharpe Square and a short history walk. Dunn’s River is a full day trip from Montego Bay, roughly 90 minutes each way.
My take: if you want to be out of the resort three or four days a week, stay in Ocho Rios. If one or two day trips is plenty, Montego Bay saves you the transfer.
Beaches
Neither town has a Seven Mile Beach; for that you go to Negril. In Ocho Rios, Ocho Rios Bay Beach is the UDC-run town beach right beside the cruise pier, and most of the better beaches belong to resorts along the coast, from Mammee Bay west of town to the coves east of it. In Montego Bay, Doctor’s Cave on the Hip Strip is the famous public beach, a bathing club with calm water, and again the best sand belongs to the resorts at Mahoe Bay, Rose Hall and beyond. In both places, choose your resort for its beach.
Nightlife
Montego Bay is livelier after dark. The Hip Strip has bars, restaurants and Margaritaville, which runs a nightclub late at night, a few minutes from the airport resorts. Ocho Rios is quieter, and most evenings happen at the resorts, with shows, theme nights and live music. If you want a night in town, there’s Margaritaville Ocho Rios.

Getting there
Most people fly into Sangster International in Montego Bay, which puts Montego Bay resorts about 15 to 20 minutes away. Sandals puts its Ocho Rios resorts at about 90 minutes from the same airport, and Sandals Ochi gives the distance as 61 miles (99 km). I’d allow up to two hours with traffic and a stop. Knutsford Express runs coaches from the Montego Bay airport station to Ocho Rios if you’re not on a resort transfer.
Ocho Rios has its own small airport, Ian Fleming International (OCJ), about 9 miles from the Sandals resorts in town. Scheduled flights there are limited, so check with your airline. Sandals’ FAQ says its included transfers in Jamaica are from Montego Bay airport only.
Resorts
Ocho Rios has a strong, mostly open spread. Moon Palace Jamaica is the big family resort in town, Hotel Riu Ocho Rios on Mammee Bay has a water park, Franklyn D. Resort in Runaway Bay gives every family a vacation nanny, and couples can choose between three Sandals and two Couples resorts. Some of Runaway Bay is still on its way back: Bahia Principe Explore Jamaica reopens on December 1, 2026, and Beaches Runaway Bay has no opening date. See the best all-inclusive resorts in Ocho Rios, or where to stay in Ocho Rios for the areas.
Montego Bay has more resorts in total, but Hurricane Melissa hit this coast hard in 2025. Open now are the Iberostar resorts at Rose Hall, the two Riu resorts on Mahoe Bay, Round Hill, a partly reopened Half Moon, and the Trelawny resorts toward Falmouth. Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Caribbean Cay reopen on December 18, 2026, and the Hyatt, Secrets, Dreams, Breathless and Jewel Grande resorts at Rose Hall are listed for 2027 by the Jamaica Tourist Board. Cruise ships and crowds
Both towns are busy cruise ports. In the first seven months of 2026, Ocho Rios had 76 cruise calls and Montego Bay 73, according to the Jamaica Information Service. Ship days hit Ocho Rios harder, because the passengers head for the same few attractions: Dunn’s River opens early, at 7 am, on the days the UDC lists as cruise-ship days (Wednesday, Thursday and Friday). Locals will tell you to do the falls first thing, or on a day with no ship in.
The middle ground
If you can’t decide, look at the coast between them. Falmouth and the Trelawny resorts are about 30 minutes east of Montego Bay, with a shorter transfer than Ocho Rios and Martha Brae on the doorstep. See Ocho Rios vs Falmouth for how that side compares. On a week or more, you can also split the stay: a few nights in each town, with a transfer or a Knutsford coach in between.
Who should pick which
- Pick Ocho Rios if you want waterfalls, adventure parks and day trips close by, and you don’t mind a longer transfer.
- Pick Montego Bay if your trip is short, you want the shortest transfer, or you’d like a night out on the Hip Strip.
- Families who want activities do better in Ocho Rios, with Dunn’s River and Mystic Mountain close.
- Couples are well served in both; Ocho Rios has more couples resorts open right now. Choosing between Sandals resorts? See my guide to the Sandals resorts in Jamaica.
