My local take

Frenchman’s Cove is a small beach in a deep green cove at San San, where a freshwater river runs across the sand and into the sea. It’s part of a resort of villas and a great house, and day visitors buy a pass at the gate. The operator’s current day-pass page lists daily opening hours, and in September 2026 the Caribbean Journal still ranked it among Jamaica’s best beaches. My take: it suits couples and families who want a quiet, looked-after beach with shade, restrooms and food, and who don’t mind paying for it. What sets it apart is the choice of water. You can swim in the sea, then rinse off in the river, which is calm and fresh. Locals will tell you weekends and public holidays bring Kingston families over the mountains, and the beach is small, so it feels full quickly.

How to get there

Frenchman’s Cove is at San San, off the main coast road a few minutes’ drive east of Port Antonio. It’s on the same stretch of coast as the Blue Lagoon. Parking is limited and first come, first served, according to the operator.

From Kingston, allow roughly two to two and a half hours over the hills; from Ocho Rios, about two and a half hours along the north coast. Those are estimates, not timed routes. From Montego Bay it’s a long drive, so most people come from a stay in Portland. The resort says it can arrange transport with tourism-licensed local companies.

Without a car: Knutsford Express runs scheduled coaches with connections to Portland. From Port Antonio, a licensed JUTA taxi to San San is a short ride; agree the price, and when to collect you, before you set off.

What to expect

The beach is small and sheltered, backed by trees and cliffs, with the river running down one side into the sea. The operator lists public restrooms near the beach and freshwater rinse stations; soaps and chemicals aren’t allowed near the river or the beach. Ball games are allowed only on the lawn, not on the sand.

Food comes from an independently run beach bar and grill serving Jamaican dishes, from jerk chicken to lobster, plus drinks. It accepts cash, Visa and Mastercard. Daybeds rent from the bar for JA$400 each.

The resort itself covers 48 acres, with 18 villas and 10 rooms in the Great House. The films Lord of the Flies and Knight and Day were shot on the beach, according to the operator. Snorkeling and other water trips around San San, including the Blue Lagoon, can be arranged through the resort reception.

Local tips

  • Pay by card if you can. The operator charges JA$250 less per adult and per child than the cash price.

  • Arrive near 9 am on a weekday for the best spot under the trees. Passes are first come, first served.

  • Don’t pack a cooler. Outside food and drinks aren’t allowed, so bring money for the beach bar instead.

  • Leave the speaker at home. The beach rules ban amplified music, smoking and vaping, and pets.

  • Groups of 30 or more can ask for a discount on entry through the front desk.

Before you go

  • It isn’t free: day passes are priced in Jamaican dollars.
  • Once you leave, you can’t come back in on the same pass.
  • The sea can be rougher than the river, so keep an eye on children in the water, and check sea conditions with staff on the day.

The operator lists JA$2,500 for adults and children over 12 if you pay by card or in advance, or JA$2,750 in cash. Children aged 4 to 12 are JA$1,500 by card or JA$1,750 in cash, and children under 4 are free. Check the official beach page for current prices before you go.

What time does Frenchman's Cove open?

The operator lists 9:00 am to 5:00 pm daily, with gates and facilities closing at 5:30 pm. There’s no re-entry once you leave.

Can you bring food to Frenchman's Cove?

No. Outside food, drinks and coolers are not allowed. An independently run beach bar and grill sells Jamaican food and drinks and takes cash and cards.

Is Frenchman's Cove near the Blue Lagoon?

Yes. Both are at San San, a short drive east of Port Antonio, so many people visit them on the same day.
