No car?

There is no easy public transport to Crescent. A licensed taxi or a tour that includes transfers from Ocho Rios is the practical way in.

My local take

Sun Valley is the opposite of the big Ocho Rios parks. It is a working family farm at Crescent, in the St Mary hills above Oracabessa, where the Binns family walk small groups through the property. The Gleaner has featured Lorna Binns as the guide and the plantation as a botanical attraction in Oracabessa. Tour sellers describe a walk through fruit trees, coconuts and medicinal plants, with fruit to taste and hummingbird feeders along the way. This is St Mary country life: bush medicine, fruit straight off the tree and a story about the land from the days of slavery to now. If you grew up in rural Jamaica, it will feel like visiting a relative’s yard. If you didn’t, it is one of the gentler ways to see that side of the island.

Here is the honest status. The Jamaica Tourist Board’s reopenings list, last updated February 9, 2026, shows Sun Valley Plantation as open after Hurricane Melissa. But the plantation has no website of its own, we found no active official social page, and we found no 2026 notice from the family or the Jamaican press about current tour days or prices. Guidebook hours and phone numbers we found online are years old and don’t agree with each other, so we haven’t printed them. My take: this is worth the trip if you like gardens and farm life, but only once someone has confirmed the family is taking visitors that day. Don’t just turn up.

If you want a garden day that is confirmed open, Konoko Falls in Ocho Rios has gardens and a small waterfall, and Seville Heritage Park near St Ann’s Bay tells the plantation story from the Taíno onward. Down the hill in Oracabessa is James Bond Beach, though its status is also unconfirmed. For the wider area, see our Ocho Rios guide.

How to get there

Sun Valley is at Crescent, inland from Oracabessa in St Mary. From Oracabessa you head up into the hills on the road toward Jack’s River, and the last stretch is a rough country road. Plan on roughly 30 to 45 minutes from Ocho Rios town, depending on traffic and road conditions. From the resorts east of Ocho Rios, such as Couples Tower Isle, you are already on the right side of town, so the drive is shorter. From Montego Bay it is a long day, roughly two hours or more each way on the north coast highway.

Most visitors go with a driver or a tour operator that includes transport. Ian Fleming International Airport at Boscobel, used by small and private planes, is a short drive away along the coast.

What to expect

Expect a guided walk, not a theme park. Tour sellers that offer Sun Valley describe a working farm with tropical fruit trees, coconuts, medicinal herbs and hummingbird feeders, a guide who explains how each plant is grown and used, and fruit or juice to taste. Some packages sold from Ocho Rios add lunch and hotel transfers. One shore-excursion seller notes that the walk is over paved, gravel and packed-dirt paths, several on slopes, and that the road in is bumpy.

We couldn’t confirm current tour days, start times or prices from the plantation itself, so we’ve left them out. If you book through a tour company, ask what is included, how long you will spend on the farm and whether the family has confirmed your date.

Local tips

  • Confirm before you go. Ask a licensed tour operator, your hotel's tour desk or the Jamaica Tourist Board to check that the plantation is receiving visitors on your date.
  • Wear closed shoes with grip. Farm paths can be muddy after rain, and St Mary gets plenty of it.
  • Bring insect repellent and some Jamaican cash for drinks or produce.
  • Pair it with a swim and lunch in Oracabessa or back in Ocho Rios, rather than making it the whole day.

Before you go

  • Status is unconfirmed: the Tourist Board list shows it open, but we found no current word from the family on tour days or prices.
  • There is no official website or online booking, and old guidebook phone numbers and hours conflict.
  • The road up from Oracabessa is rough and narrow in places.
  • The walk is on uneven, sloping farm paths, so it is hard going for anyone with limited mobility.
  • It is small and low-key: if you want ziplines or waterfalls, this is not the place.
