Gambling in Jamaica

Share with someone:

Many people want to enjoy a glamorous, flashy, neon light filled Las Vegas holiday, but still want to be able to enjoy a tropical vacation in the Caribbean.

Jamaica offers tourists the best of both worlds, offering pristine beaches, flavorsome food, and world class casinos, where even the most casual of gamblers can find something to spice up their vacation.

For the longest time there have been rules and regulations concerning casinos in Jamaica, and until recently, only resorts that received special permission from the Jamaican government could offer slot machines to tourists. However, in 2010, in spite of the opposition shown by many church organizations, a bill was passed by both houses of Parliament to expand and regulate casinos and gambling in Jamaica.

It took until November 2012 for legislatures to collectively pass two bills that would allow full-scale casino operations in Jamaica.

Jamaica now features five cities with legal gambling facilities, the largest gambling city being Montego Bay which has two casinos with 50 gaming, slot and video poker machines. The largest casino in Jamaica is Monte Carlo Gaming Lounge at the Terra Nova in Kingston, which features 150 gaming and video poker machines.

The different types of gambling that is available in Jamaica are horseracing tracks, sports betting parlors, and casinos, where slot machines are the primary floor games, but video poker, craps, blackjack, roulette, and Caribbean Stud Poker are also available.

Caribbean Stud Poker is a common game in Jamaica, due to its beginnings being in Aruba. It is very similar to regular poker in that it shares most of the same rules; however, the players do not play against one another, rather playing against the dealer only. Another difference is that the dealer shows the players one of his cards, which he deals facing up. Players are then allowed to make bets. Caribbean Stud Poker is very popular throughout Jamaica, as is often played on cruise ships that frequent the Caribbean.

There are different places where you can enjoy legal gambling. Treasure Hunt Kingston, which is known for its on-site dining, high payouts, unique games only available to Treasure Hunt establishments, and clear terms. Treasure Hunt Ocho Rios is open all day, every day, and features 140 game machines, and an on-site bar. Acropolis  has four gaming centers in Jamaica, and features a wide variety of games, including Roulette and Blackjack; and you can enjoy dinner and a cold drink at the bar.

Fortunately, many Jamaican resorts include slot machines on the premises, so if you don’t want to go to a bigger establishment, you can still try to win your millions from the comfort of your resort.
