Reach Falls is considered to be one of the most spectacular waterfalls on the whole island. It’s positioned beautifully among the breathtaking exotic tropical rain forest on an 11-acre property.
This paradise is located on the eastern end of Jamaica about 45 minutes from Portland and is about an hour and a half long drive from Ocho Rios. It’s a natural beauty and provides a tranquil environment.
Quick History
It’s said that runaway slaves from nearby plantations in St. Thomas first found Reach Falls. They were seeking asylum in the John Crow Mountains hills and made the discovery.
The location itself is somewhat remote, so not many tourists know about it, and visitors often have the entire area all to themselves when they go. The location was also the setting for a few Hollywood movies, including ‘Cocktails’ with Tom Cruise and the ‘Lord of the Flies’ remake.
What to Expect at Reach Falls
When you arrive at the falls, you will witness a truly stunning setting – the crystal clear cool water invites you to a refreshing swim. You’ll notice vines hanging from trees, and natural bamboo located all around the waterfalls.
There are more than 23 different species of fern, many of which you can’t see anywhere else in the world. Reach Falls boasts a diverse range of birds, such as the black and yellow billed amazon parrot.
The scenic hike up to the falls and swimming in the river is bathed in sheer splendor. If you are quiet enough, you may even catch sight of a wild pig running through the foliage of the mountain.
Feel free to venture under the waterfalls and find the hidden holes that have been naturally carved out by the cascading water. There is also a secret cave behind one of the falls that you can climb into and exit just above the waterfall.
If you’re brave enough, you can try jumping off the cliff into the cool water below.
Reach Falls also offers a natural Jacuzzi, where your body and mind will be invigorated by the pulsating water as it flows through the passage.
Reach Falls Entry Price
For locals with ID the price of entry is just $500 Jamaican dollars. I’m not too sure about the cost for international residents but I assume it’s around 5 USD.
