Located in the all-inclusive belt of the main tourism town of Montego Bay, the Hilton Rose Hall is an ideal, family getaway location. From parents and grandparents, to toddlers and everyone in between, this is a resort that tries to cater to the needs of all guests; and does a reasonably good job of it based on the majority of reviews. Here’s my review:

What I liked

  • Lovely beach: an expansive, clear water beach with lovely sand; suitable for swimming and watersports.
  • Nice rooms: ultra-modern, maybe even a little corporate (reportedly typical of Hilton hotels), but comfy and relaxing nonetheless
  • The waterpark: Jamaica’s largest waterpark and is one of the main gathering points for fun at this hotel.
  • Food choices: six restaurants provide palate-pleasing dishes, with a few Jamaican favourites tossed in for good measure
  • Activity-filled: plenty to do to pass the time for both children and adults, especially at day time.

What I disliked

    • Nothing much to dislike, except that nightly activities don’t go on much past 9 p.m. here, if so late. But it’s a family resort after all.

Overall Assessment

I’ve never stayed at another Hilton (although I passed through the one that used to be open in Kingston some years ago), but from what I heard from other people, the Rose Hall version lives up to the brand’s reputation. For me, I was charmed by the overall ambience, beginning with the lobby, with its blend of dark/accented furniture, art pieces, muted light fixtures, and stone-tiled flooring.

The sleek and crisp design elements extend to the rooms. I stayed in one of the ocean front rooms (more like partial ocean view), which held a plush king-size bed, a large, flat screen TV, and a mini fridge. Colours here contrast and complement each other nicely, between the dark wooden dresser, accented wall, tan floor tiles, and white surrounding walls. A sliding glass door leads out onto a private balcony. I was also impressed with the bathroom, which, although maybe a little on the small side, had polished chrome fittings and granite, a mirror, plus the standard tub and shower arrangement.

Please note that my room was ideal for a couple or small family but there are larger suites you can book if you are travelling with a large family, some of which have their own living rooms and full kitchens.

Having fun on any given day at the Hilton Rose Hall revolves around the main pool, waterpark and the beach. The waterpark, with its lazy river, slides and garden, is loads of fun, but be aware that it’s also a favourite for kids, so it’s bound to get noisy. The main, standalone pool is likely to be a bit quieter and is more frequented by adults. All waterways are complemented by bars and refreshment spots, so you can stay hydrated with your drinks of choice at all times of the day.

Swimming in the beach is a joy, as is passing the time on one of many of the lounge chairs on offer, or even indulging in snorkeling. If you want some action off-property, the Hilton also provides a shuttle to the nearby Rose Hall Great House, plus the famed Hip Strip is only about a 15-minute drive away.

Nightly entertainment comes in the form of hitting the bars or hanging out at the Cricket Club (a nightclub), but as mentioned earlier, things usually turn down pretty early due to the family-friendly atmosphere.
